PRC-100 not connecting - I have tried all the prescriptions from prior postings...

2014-01-02 by Jason Glover

New friends,

I have a DKV Mark IV, and I am moderately tech savvy, but I just can't reconnect the PRC to the DKV. I recently installed an ethernet port next to the piano (Dec 31) and the piano worked as of Dec 31, but after rebooting (the manual said to reboot before installing the ethernet cable), it refuses to connect to the PRC-100.

I have carefully perused and applied most of the fixes to this topic, and I am checking to see if there is something more I can do:

My PRC-100 comes on, and works, but can't find the dkv wireless lan. Even when it is inches away.

However, i can see the DKV network broadcasting from my ipad (as athomik and kevin g have suggested, to be sure the I/O wireless is broadcasting).

I have applied Carol's patient rebooting process as well, including a "30 min off time" for the DKV, as I once read in the manual.

I have turned off a nearby WAP (wireless access point).

One tidbit, I am using very very old software...i havent' upgraded in at least 6yrs. It sounds like the only path to an upgrade is via a cd-rom...which Yamaha support is sending me(open to other suggestions). I'm not convinced the upgrade will work, since the PRC-100 has to be assigned to the DKV in the first place.

Can anyone lend any help? One post suggested using "dkvbrowser" on a pc to force the pc to be the controller - how can i find this?

Any previous folks with problems get theirs solved (GregB post was very similar to my issue)...?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Very interesting that two users are having essentially identical problems, under identical scenarios.

In both cases, the PRC-100 can't see the MarkIV.
I think in both cases we've established that the piano is presenting its access point since other nearby computers can see it.
In both cases, the MarkIV is running very old firmware.

I don't think there's anything we can conclude from this, but it's interesting anyway.

In both cases, I suggest getting the 3.0 upgrade from Yamaha on CD. I believe that upgrade also included the boot floppy disk. I hope so, since neither of these users will be able to create one (since that requires PRC-100, IIRC).

Anyway, once these pianos are on version 3.0, there's some chance that the Yamaha iPhone/iPad/iPod app will be able to control them.
There's also a chance that droidklavier will be able to control them (if you happen to have an android device instead of an iOS device)

And, lastly, there's a chance that DKVBrowser (available here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dkvbrowser/) will be able to control the piano.

As none of this upgrading is likely to fix the PRC (which probably has a hardware problem of one sort or another (bad wireless card?) ), the interesting aspect will be how to get the newer versions of the operating system at that point. Certainly the iOS and android apps won't let you do it, but I think there's at least a chance that DKVBrowser will. I forget what the method is to check for and download an update, but I think it is in the "Internet" section...and if it is, DKVBrowser should let you get there. But...it's also possible that I did something stupid, and DKVBrowser won't work with an older firmware.

Let's get that far first...get these pianos updated to 3.0 via the Yamaha CD. I'll commit to doing whatever it takes to get DKVBrowser working on those pianos to the point where you can request the piano to start the installation of the latest firmware. At that point, all of the available software (iOS, android, DKVBrowser on PC or Mac) will be able to control your piano.

OH WAIT! I just remembered something. I don't think I'll have to touch DKVBrowser for this... once these pianos are on 3.0, I think the "virtual PRC" should be there, and that gives you everything you need to get to the latest and greatest... (hah, I should probably go back and edit this email to basically state that, but I'm too lazy) Happy New Year everyone!

-Kevin

Thanks for this reply and the other from Bill.

I intended to let everyone know that i tried everything and failed...and then serendipity intervened....my internet went down, shutting down all the wifi in the house. i tried one more time, with the PRC literally TOUCHING the i/o wireless card, and it connected right away. I believe the WIFI was so strong, and as one commenter noted, the I/O card so weak, that the PRC could only see the wifi, even with the closest WAP (access point) turned off. Now that the piano has been assigned, it seems to be working fine. In fact, the LAN also automatically connected, and I enjoyed the "Complimentary Channel" Disklavier radio.

I would add to the very detailed "patience method" of rebooting, restarting, and reassigning the PRC, "shut down all wifi in the house";...

Last tidbit, would someone send me a link to purchase a more powerful wireless card, someone had suggested it, but would be beneficial to know the exact item.

Meanwhile, I have the 3.0 software en route from Yamaha. Will report back when I have upgraded to 3.0. We can work with DKVBrowser, etc from there.

Hi Jason,

This is great news. I am glad to hear you are up and running. I will incorporate your suggestion when helping someone pair their PRC-100 to their Mark IV.

WiFi has "channels"...you might want to try moving your home WiFi onto a different channel from the piano's WiFi...

I had the same problem with one of my customers. After some investigating, I found that their wireless router was in the cupboard next to the piano. Once that was moved to the other side of the house, there was no problem.

You can also change channels on the pianos itself, although I haven't found that very useful in the past. I think that it sometimes it is just the power of the Wi-Fi router drowning out the Disklavier/PRC signal.

There's an android app I use that's been helpful diagnosing wifi issues -- it provides data on signal strength and channels. I use WIFI ANALYZER but I'm sure there're others as well.

I would be more than happy to help you. I am very good working with the Mark IV and know it a little better than I should. Plus, I'm also very good at troubleshooting network issues. I found that earlier software upgrades versions changed some defaults settings that make it harder to connect. I'll walk you through but it might be best over the phone. I'm retired and I'm at my home from an extended trip.

Email me your telephone number.

You could try to call me, but until I enter your phone number in my phone's address book, my phone won't ring! I get an extreme number of telemarketers or wrong number hang ups daily. - so if I'm not looking at my phone the moment you call I most likely will not answer. You must to leave a message longer than 6 seconds and I can call you back.

My PRC-100 comes on, and works, but can't find the dkv wireless lan. Even when it is inches away.

I have applied Carol's patient rebooting process as well, including a "30 min off time" for the DKV, as I once read in the manual.

I have turned off a nearby WAP (wireless access point).

Any previous folks with problems get theirs solved (GregB post was very similar to my issue)...?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Similarly on the PC, Netstumbler can be used to analyze WiFi channel strength.
