Update To Control Software for DC3A, DC5A, DC6A, and DC7A Disklaviers

I recently traded my Yamaha DC3IIXG disklavier for a DC3A disklavier. When I began loading individual songs into the flash memory of the DC3A I discovered after loading up memories 0-A that I received an error message which stated simply "An error has occurred". Furthermore, if I tried to load any further songs into the DC3A's 16 MB of flash memory , I received the message "Unformatted memory disk" and I could no longer access any of the songs that had been stored in that memory disk nor could I pass the "unformatted memory disk" memory slot by cycling through the drives from either the control or the remote. When I attempted to format the "unformatted memory disk", I got the message "Cannot format disk". Consulting the manual, I learned that when you get the "Unformatted memory disk" message, your only recourse is to reinitialize the memory to the factory defaults. This, of course, erases all of the songs in all the memories and means the loss of several hours of work. I reported the above problems to Yamaha service in California and they were very good at working with Japan to prepare a flash memory upgrade that will solve the problem. It turns out that the memory architecture of the DC3A is arranged differently than that in the DC3IIXG and differently than described in the manuals that came with the DC3A. In the DC3IIXG each memory held 1 MB of data and hence one could fill all 16 of the memory slots with songs before receiving a "memory is full" message. With the DC3A. each memory slot holds approximately 1.4 MB of data and hence one can fill only 11 memory slots before getting the "An error has occurred" message . This latter message and the consequences described above after receiving this message are a reflection of a bug in the firmware which Yamaha has now corrected in the V. 4.32 Control software on their web site. Apparently I was the first person in the U.S. to attempt to fill the memory slots of the DC3A because the folks at Yamaha in California stated that they were unaware of the problem previous to my pointing it out to them. I would urge those persons having the models of disklaviers in the title of this e-mail to download ( http://www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/group005/fgrop005.htm ) and install the 4.32 Control firmware upgrade which corrects the problem described above. I have done so and I can verify that one now gets the message "Disk is full" upon reaching the 16 MB memory limit and there are no problems getting the dreaded "Unformatted memory disk" message and subsequent events described above. I am grateful to Yamaha for their quick and thorough response to addressing this problem when it was pointed out to them. Tom
