Disklavier

I did a little searching and didn't find any recent posts listing which Pianosoft (Smart, Plus, CD) titles were favorites of members of this user group. Seems like a number of us have found some real gems (and alas, some real duds!). Maybe the group lead would set up a poll and help others new to purchasing these (not inexpensive) titles some guidance. With the sales on now at a number of these reseller sites (eastcoastmusic, sheetmusicplus, Yamahamusicsoft) and deals for new and used Pianosoft titles on eBay and Amazon, it might be a good time to stock up before some of these titles disappear forever (like Jamie Cullum's Twenty Something - Smart Pianosoft diskette).

I'll start with a few recent gems I found compelling (meaning: great arrangements with good-excellent piano accompaniment). In general I've found that the following pianists really make the Disklavier sound great:

Mike Garson - plays the piano accompaniment on many Smart Pianosoft albums as well as his own CDs

Sue Downs - her Pianosoft plus CDs and accompaniment are wonderful as are her solo albums.

Tom Zink - also does a fine job with R&B as well as some rock and pop accompaniments.

Shelly Berg and Bret Mills also come to mind as good DK pianists.

My current top favorites are:

1. Rit's House - Lee Ritenour - SPS (SmartPianoSoft so needs matching CD)

2. Tracks of my Tears - Various - Piansoft+Audio on CD

3. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis - SPS

4. Travel Log - Joni Mitchell - SPS

5. Room for Squares & Heavier Things - John Mayer - SPS

6. Home for Now - Tom Zink - P+A-CD

7.Best of - George Benson - SPS

9. Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder - SPS

10. Best of the Song Books - Ella Fitzgerald - SPS

Lots more but that's a good start.

Also fellow Disklavier fans would probably love to see some type of "lending library" (with the publisher's approval, of course) for "out-of-print" Pianosoft titles that still sound great but no longer have a revenue stream for the publisher or artist. How about it Hal Leonard and Yamaha? ;-)

I only have a few Pianosoft titles that came with my DKV - a few mediocre classical collections and a collection by Dick Hyman that is fair. I'm not too interested in multi channel stuff, as I have an old Mk II. When not playing the piano myself (yes, even more fun then listening) I listen to free performances from disklavierworld.com or Doug McKenzie. When I listen to samples from Yamaha they sound pretty lame for my tastes. I wish Yamaha would hire some great modern jazz pianists to do solo performances, but there are slim pickings in that area. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be glad to listen.

Mike Garson also was regularly associated with the David Bowie camp ... hence (I believe) the inclusion of the two BEST OF DAVID BOWIE titles in the Smart PianoSoft Series

I agree, Sue Downs is a great performer, but the synth for drums, base etc on the DVK is pretty much up there with basic default midi sound these days..ie BAD. It's pretty strange that Yamaha can have great keyboards but failed with the Disklaviers synth.
For the fun of it, a few times I just loaded her (Sues) midi into my PC with Sonar and use the cool softsynth dumkits etc and for the piano part just map it via midi, If I had the time it would be pretty easy to find some great commercial soft synths for drums, base etc. 
I suppose the MK4 is pretty old now with it's whole crappy 300mhz CPU and 128meg ram and its tiny little 80gig HDD, it won't handle much more than the sound 'fonts' it already has.. it's a pity as I agree the fake synths are awful and they only 'just' pass with a base and drums for trios..I can't stand when songs have trumpets and strings.
Also, it would be good if Yamaha actually released some nicer piano solo's, most are so ridged and feelingless. Also pretty much most of their library is from 2004. I recently stoppped my radio subscription because of the lack of 'anything modern at all' aspect. The movie music consists of stuff no later than 1995 lol.
On that note, if anyone out there is willing to record some nice midi's (non classical) from their Disklavier it would be nice to hear!

    I have a few selections, not PianoSmart, that are my favorites, like a few of the Sue Downs pieces, but for me they wear out pretty quickly because of the limitations of the synthesizer. Wish there was a product that would take advantage of the plethora of Virtual Instruments that have been produced.Most of the PianoSoft products would "last" longer to me if the accomp parts were believable. There is a lack of grit when needed. Vibratos are too too... They are nice for parties, when I don't listen as closely.
On another note, I have a good friend that has been producing transcripts of choice Bill Evans Albums. He then takes the transcription and produces the performance on a DisKlavier. It's amazingly accurate. I have to agree that the synth sounds coming out of the DKs are not on par with even modern entry-level synth keyboards so I typically don't play the Pianosoft titles with ensemble often. What I think makes the DK sound fantastic are either the Smart Pianosoft paired with the matching commercial audio CD (Adele -21, Art Blakey, Brasil 66, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Genesis, John Meyer, Frozen, just to name a few) AND Pianosoft Plus Audio on CD (David Garfield and the Monster Trio, Tracks of my Tears, Shades of Blue, I Love Being Here with You, Latin Jazz, Porgy and Bess, Terry Trotter Trio for some favorite titles). These can be had for a reasonable price on eBay or eastcoastmusic (while their sale is on). These have full REAL instrumentation done in a studio and as long as your DK has a CD player the Plus Audio titles are all pretty darn good.

For those of you who are lucky enough to have a collection of "out of print" SPS diskettes (or the midi file versions), I'd be interested in comparing lists.

One tough lesion I learned last week when trying to sync the Yam SPS songs for Count Basie - April in Paris with the correct CD is that there are 15 different versions of that exact title by 4 different record companies and many with tracks missing or added so it pays to carefully compare what the SPS package states is the correct compatible commercial CD by catalog number. Good used CDs are $1-4 each so building a library isn't too expensive.

Oh I totally forgot about those! You right, with real instruments and the piano.  I only have a few of those Pianosoft Plus Audio CD's. The proper Yamaha ones. (can't remember exactly as I am away from the piano) A few years ago there was not much of a choice, I should re look at this, seems like there are much much more now. The 'webonly piano' titles were pretty good but kinda limited range.
I think if it's properly done and the piano part was recorded live on a Disklavier or so then it's great, because you won't hear another piano 'ontop' or any crap like that. From memory the Bette Middler from Yamaha was kinda sloppy played over the original songs. It was ok, but not really impressive.

Also, it would be good if Yamaha actually released some nicer piano solo's, most are so ridged and feelingless. Also pretty much most of their library is from 2004. I recently stoppped my radio subscription because of the lack of 'anything modern at all' aspect. The movie music consists of stuff no later than 1995 lol.
On that note, if anyone out there is willing to record some nice midi's (non classical) from their Disklavier it would be nice to hear!

That explains a lot. As a relatively new owner of a DKC850 with my Yamaha grand, I’ve purchased multiple CD’s where the end result was almost a regret of having made that CD purchase, and I always thought it was the DKC that was the culprit.  Now what I think I am hearing is that not all “DKC compatible” CD’s are created equally and this is to be expected, where finding a “good” one is almost hit & miss.

 

I love jazz and big band as well as Broadway and show tunes, and one of the things that makes my DKC a joy to listen to is the wide variety of instruments that come out – not just the piano which is almost always well done, but just as much hearing well-integrated voices totally in sync with the piano, like drums, bass, violin, sax, etc.

 

Is there a particular place or website to go to, and/or a particular TYPE to seach for (ie, “pianosoft plus”?) to search for to avoid disappointment in the resulting quality?

Oh I totally forgot about those! You right, with real instruments and the piano.  I only have a few of those Pianosoft Plus Audio CD's. The proper Yamaha ones. (can't remember exactly as I am away from the piano) A few years ago there was not much of a choice, I should re look at this, seems like there are much much more now. The 'webonly piano' titles were pretty good but kinda limited range.

 

I think if it's properly done and the piano part was recorded live on a Disklavier or so then it's great, because you won't hear another piano 'ontop' or any crap like that. From memory the Bette Middler from Yamaha was kinda sloppy played over the original songs. It was ok, but not really impressive.

I have to agree that the synth sounds coming out of the DKs are not on par with even modern entry-level synth keyboards so I typically don't play the Pianosoft titles with ensemble often.  What I think makes the DK sound fantastic are either the Smart Pianosoft paired with the matching commercial audio CD (Adele -21, Art Blakey, Brasil 66, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Genesis, John Meyer, Frozen, just to name a few) AND Pianosoft Plus Audio on CD (David Garfield and the Monster Trio, Tracks of my Tears, Shades of Blue, I Love Being Here with You, Latin Jazz, Porgy and Bess, Terry Trotter Trio for some favorite titles).  These can be had for a reasonable price on eBay or eastcoastmusic (while their sale is on).  These have full REAL instrumentation done in a studio and as long as your DK has a CD player the Plus Audio titles are all pretty darn good.  

 

For those of you who are lucky enough to have a collection of "out of print" SPS diskettes (or the midi file versions), I'd be interested in comparing lists.  

 

One tough lesion I learned last week when trying to sync the Yam SPS songs for Count Basie - April in Paris with the correct CD is that there are 15 different versions of that exact title by 4 different record companies and many with tracks missing or added so it pays to carefully compare what the SPS package states is the correct compatible commercial CD by catalog number.  Good used CDs are $1-4 each so building a library isn't too expensive.

I agree, Sue Downs is a great performer, but the synth for drums, base etc on the DVK is pretty much up there with basic default midi sound these days..ie BAD. It's pretty strange that Yamaha can have great keyboards but failed with the Disklaviers synth.

 

For the fun of it, a few times I just loaded her (Sues) midi into my PC with Sonar and use the cool softsynth dumkits etc and for the piano part just map it via midi, If I had the time it would be pretty easy to find some great commercial soft synths for drums, base etc.

Depending on the retailer, you can choose a subgroup of Pianosoft titles. On Yamahamusicsoft once you select the type of instrument you will can choose a product subgroup (see image attached) On other sites/stores I always shop for "Smart Pianosoft" - these sync with commercial audio CDs or "Pianosoft Plus Audio CD" these are CDs with both full instrumentation/vocals accompanied with your piano. I avoid most of the "Pianosoft Plus" with midi or "Pianosoft Solo" titles.

As others have noted, much more hit and miss are the floppies using the built-in synth sounds. The best feature small jazz groups like the Mike Garson Trio's "Nice and Easy Vol. 1.

The worst (by far) is the Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor, which has an unlistenable faux-orchestra accompaniment to otherwise worthwhile piano performance by Bryan Pezzone. I'm also not a fan of the Smart disks that superimpose piano noodling on a commercial CD that often is distracting and detracting.

I do think the list price for all of these disks is way out of line. I have been fortunate to find many of them at a discount. It's a shame that many are no longer available. And an even bigger shame that there aren't more disks being recorded by name artists.

What are your sources for finding solo floppy disks, jazz and classical plus Audio CD's for sale?  I have a Mark IV that came with a pre-programmed library that I have never added to but would like to.  [at reasonable cost]

I got most of my disks via Craigslist from a former piano store owner who was unloading his leftover Disklavier inventory at a discount. That was a couple years ago and I think they're all gone now.

I think by far the best value for anyone looking to load up their piano with a ton of music relatively cheaply is this offering on eBay: 77 Floppy Discs All Styles Pianodisc or Disklavier. I'm not connected to the seller, but I did buy these disks and they're excellent. There's so much music in a variety of genres that I haven't even listened to half of it.

The only drawback is that the floppies are not labeled (in fact you have to put number labels on them, which are included). He does provide a spreadsheet listing the pieces on each floppy, but there are a lot of inaccuracies, especially in the order of play, so you're never quite sure what's on each and in what order. I'd like to figure out how to copy them to a hard drive with the track info listed so that I can go right to the piece I want.

If this is too much music or too high of a price, the seller has a variety of smaller packages based on individual classical composers.

Hi,

Has anyone seen a hardware problem like this on a MkII Disklavier?

I have a MkII Disklavier with a DKC100R control unit (and another unit that adds MIDI file compatibility).

It stopped working correctly for playback about 4 years ago. Only some of the notes playback - it seems almost random which notes don’t play. This affects any disk - prerecorded or new recordings made on the unit. Some notes play perfectly, the other don’t trigger at all. Maybe 1/2 of all notes play.

There is a great piano technician that comes to tune it, and has experience with Disklaviers. He believes that it might be the power supply, but hasn’t been able to test that yet. I was just curious to see if anyone else has had a similar problem?
