Strange Sounds

2015-09-26 by Stew

When I turned on my disklavier today music from a local classical music station was coming from it quite loudly. The piano played ok but the radio music would not go away. Anybody have any ideas?

I have a Disklavier GranTouch DGTII2XG bought in 1998.

Thanks for any help

Hi Stew,

Sounds like you may be experiencing some RFI (radio frequency interference) especially if there is a high powered radio transmitter tower nearby (a few blocks away.

Is there anything plugged into the "AUX IN" input jack? If so unplug it and see if it goes away. It's possible the RFI is coming into the system and being amplified there. Especially if there is a long or coiled up un-shielded cable is plugged in.

Does this model have a mic input? If so remove that cable to isolate where the RFI is coming into the system.

Also see if there is a way to turn down the volume on any unused input.

I wouldn't think it would come in via a MIDI input, but who knows. You may have to disconnect any cable connected until you isolate the source of the RFI.

Also make sure the Disklavier is plugged into a properly grounded electrical outlet.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

The problem of strange musical sounds coming thru my piano has been solved. I have a portable cd player hooked up to the piano and it fell to the floor and pushed the fm button without me noticing. After I pushed that button to turn off the radio the piano works perfectly. Sorry for bothering the group with a dumb question.

I'm just glad it isn't just me and my family that do this kind of thing! :-)
