Teaching aids for Disklavier

2015-12-20 by Sion Roberts

I'm new to the group so apologies if this has been asked before.

I've recently purchased a used DC1M4 piano and am currently exploring its features. Mainly I'm interested to understand how I can use the Disklavier to help my two young children (4 and 7) begin to play the piano as neither of them have yet played a note!

It seems feasible there would be some kind of interactive piano tuition software available for the iPad or PC that could run a 'follow me' style course and offer feedback and encouragement to the child based on their key presses etc.

Can anyone recommend any suitable software?

Many thanks

Sion

Good evening, everyone.

Sion, I noticed that no one else replied to your email, so I’ll take a crack at it. I am a piano teacher who uses interactive software with all of my students. I hasten to point out, however, that I am the developer of the program that I am going to recommend. Caveat emptor.

I suggest that you look into Home Concert Xtreme (www.timewarptech.com <http://www.timewarptech.com/>) for Mac, PC, or iPad (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/home-concert-xtreme/id443017184?mt=8). The program works with Standard MIDI files.

Since the early 1990s, most of the major publishers of piano teaching materials have created MIDI files that coordinate with their books. The MIDI files typically have tracks for left and right hand as well as backing tracks that provide engaging accompaniments. HCX works interactively with these MIDI files.

HCX will turn the piano tracks into standard music notation and provides a bunch of interactive features, such as a learning mode in which the program will wait for you to play the right note and a performing mode in which the program will actually follow your tempo, musically coordinate the backing tracks, and turn the pages automatically.

There are some tricks to using interactive MIDI software with a Disklavier. For starters, if you want to use the Disklavier’s tone generator to play the MIDI backing tracks while you play the piano part, you should turn off the Disklavier’s MIDI In delay.

Excellent piano learning software that kids will love and can be hooked up to Disklavier via midi.
