Need driver for Playground Sessions and the Yamaha Disklavier DKC-850 controller for laptop

Need driver for Playground Sessions and the Yamaha Disklavier DKC-850 controller for laptop

2016-01-18 by Dennis Baldwin

Hello everyone; first let me say thank you to all of you who offered assistance to me on my last issue. My new question is: Does anyone know what driver I would need to download to have the Playground Sessions recognize my SKC-850? I connected the 850 via a midi cable to my laptop but when I open Playground Sessions it doesn't recognizing the DKC-850. I didn't see any driver files at either Yamaha or Yamaha MusicSoft that I needed. Playground Sessions refers users to the manufacturer.

Good afternoon, everyone.

Dennis, if, indeed, you are using a MIDI cable connection to the DKC-850 (as opposed to a USB cable connection), you are apparently using a MIDI interface. Some MIDI interfaces require a driver to be installed on the computer, but most do not. I suggest that you go to the website of the manufacturer of the MIDI interface, click on Support or Downloads, and see if there is a driver that should be downloaded.

On the other hand, if you are using a straight USB connection between computer and DKC-850 (i.e. a USB device cable), then you need to install the Yamaha USB MIDI driver on the computer. It is available here:

http://download.yamaha.com/usb_midi/ <http://download.yamaha.com/usb_midi/>

The DKC-850 cannot communicate on the MIDI port and the USB port simultaneously. Therefore, you have to tell the Disklavier which connection method you are using. On the DKC-850, press Setup on the remote, navigate to the MIDI section, and make sure that you have set MIDI In and MIDI Out appropriately. And, make sure that MIDI Out is set to Keyboard Out.

Lastly, there may or may not be a MIDI setup section in the Playground Sessions application. I am unfamiliar with that product and cannot help out with that. Typically, a MIDI application offers a MIDI Setup window where you designate your MIDI input and output choices. Those programs that do not offer a MIDI Setup window are typically hardwired to work with all available MIDI inputs and route MIDI output to a built-in tone generator.
