MX100A floppy drive replacement...

MX100A floppy drive replacement...

2016-02-12 by walkerfamily2567@...

I'm brand new to this group, but I'm excited to see that there are so many lovers and experts of the Disklavier!

I've owned a MX100A since 1989, and many years ago, the floppy drive failed to read any disk I inserted. Since then the MIDI ports won't work either, and now the floppy drive won't even seat a disk properly.

First of all, I'm wondering if the MIDI ports are somehow tied to a disk being seated in the floppy drive. I seem to remember (when the unit was working correctly) that in order for the piano to send or receive MIDI info, I had to have a disk in the drive. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Also, does anyone know where I could get a replacement floppy drive, and how difficult it is to replace? I'm pretty tech savvy (I've had laptops completely disassembled and reassembled them, repaired iPhones, etc.) so I'm hoping this is something I might be able to do myself.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide. I'm really hoping I can get my Disklavier up and running again!

The MX100A requires a floppy disk to be recognized in the floppy drive for the MIDI ports to function.

I believe you can get a new FDD from Yamaha Piano Service. Instillation is not very difficult.

I purchased FDD drive from Yamaha a couple of years ago and it was relatively expensive but well made and works perfectly.

Wouldn't a standard 3.5 inch computer FDD work or does it use a connector different to IDE/parallel ATA?

To bypass the dead floppy drive, starting with the piano powered off, press the midi, record, and power button simultaneously to switch to the midi input.

This will work on the Wagon grand but not the MX100A, MX100B or MX80.

The wagon seems to be a lot more intelligent than the MX series, glad I got one even if it is older LOL.

Wow... thanks so much for all the replies so far. I'll definitely try the bypass method when I get home and report back on whether it worked on my MX100A. I've also contacted Yamaha, so hopefully they'll get back to me soon with how I can order a new FDD.

Sam... I'm pretty sure it's not just a standard FDD. At the very least, it's only DD (double density), and most floppy drives available now are HD (high density).

I'll be sure to report back my progress, and if anyone else has had this problem and successfully repaired it, I'd love to hear from you.

Maybe it depends on the degree of floppy disc failure. Mine still spins the disc but will give an error of unformatted disc sometimes.

I think you can still get DD floppy drives from Ebay and other places or an older computer. I don't know if an HD drive would work you could try though and see if it works.

My floppy drive didn't work after I moved piano (MPX 100 II), looked into new one from Yamaha but price was exorbitant - around $350, and that was installing myself. Getting a tech to install was hundreds more. MIDI ports still worked, so I just used my computer to store, record and play files, which was superior. Than one day I jammed a floppy really hard into the drive a few times and it fixed it! Worth a shot...

AFAIK, Yamaha floppy drive is proprietary, you cannot use other drives.

RE: [disklavier] Re: MX100A floppy drive replacement...

Hi

HD (ie, 1.44MB) floppy disks can be used if they are formatted to DD (ie, 720KB). The following are instructions on how to do it:

“Formatting a 720kB floppy disk with Windows XP

1) Cover the square hole in the corner of the 1.44M floppy with a piece of tape

(there should be two holes - you want to cover the one WITHOUT the

write-protect shutter). If you hold the disk parallel to the floor, with

the label side up and the metal shutter away from you, it will be the hole

on the right.

2) Open a DOS window. (select “Run” in Windows 7 from the Start menu, type

cmd into the box and press enter to open up a DOS box.

3) Type in the DOS command "FORMAT A: /T:80 /N:9" and press enter and follow

the prompts.

(Windows XP doesn't even support the /F:720 switch anymore, but explicitly

defining the number of sectors and tracks works just fine.)

4) This works with Windows 7 as well.”

Kind regards

Geoff Ward

I think you can still get DD floppy drives from Ebay and other places or an older computer. I don’t know if an HD drive would work you could try though and see if it works.

Sam... I'm pretty sure it's not just a standard FDD. At the very least, it's only DD (double density), and most floppy drives available now are HD (high density).

I'll be sure to report back my progress, and if anyone else has had this problem and successfully repaired it, I'd love to hear from you.

P.S. Jeff... are you REALLY responding from an Apple Newton?!?

Hi All,
I am one of the original people that got a floppy drive Emulator working with my disklavier Mx-80 piano.
I love it since I never have to swap floppys. You just select a different floppy image that is stored on the
SD card on the emulator menu and the piano controller acts exactly as if you inserted a new floppy.
There is some work in copying and converting the floppys to the SD card.
A standard IBM floppy drive will NOT work. These were not the original standards when floppy drives first
came out. The first floppy drives had what is called a SHUGART interface. The ribbon cable and pins are
the same but the pin functions are not. Looking over the schematics for my piano, (Thanks for getting them
for me Bill) I was able to figure out what interface and functions I needed.
I used the Lotharek HXC floppy emulator which works great. Sells for about $100. I don't know if the Mx100 has the same interface, I have not looked at the schematics. For my Mx-80 Piano, I don't think you can even buy the floppy drive from yamaha anymore.
