Urgent matter

Urgent matter

2014-11-26 by Julien Roche

I was out from home for one week then when I come back and connect my Disklavier Mark 4, the ON/OFF button still flashes after more than one hour and also the USER green button is ON (but not flashing)

Impossible to connect with remote ...

Somebody can tell me what to do to restart my piano in working conditions ?

thanks a lot, first time in 4 years using this piano .

Try unplugging it from the outlet and let the piano sit for about an hour. Then power it back up.

If you experience the same problem, your hard drive has probably gone bad and will need to be replaced.

Unfortunately your hard drive probably crashed. Do what Bill says and leave it unplugged for an hour. If the problem continues, have your technician send it to Yamaha in California and see if can be re-imaged. If not, it needs replaced, probably cost at least $750. The best way to prevent this, is to just keep the Disklavier unplugged from the wall when you are not using it.

If you cannot gain a connection with the control center manually, you may have to do a cold shutdown (same as if power went out). I always try to shutdown properly if I have an issue. You can contact the service center in LA and they, or others in the group, may have better info.

Good afternoon, everyone.

Julien, if it turns out that the hard drive needs to be replaced, I recommend that you replace it with an SSD drive and enjoy improved performance. I have never replaced the SSD in a Mark IV, but there are individuals on this list who have.

Is it possible for an enterprising member of this list to sell
ready-to-install SSDs for Mark IV instruments? Or do the drives include
information specific to each individual piano that is added by Yamaha
during manufacturing, i.e. information that must be cloned from the
original drive or configured by Yamaha in a replacement drive?

The operating system, along with the factory installed music software need to be put on the hard drive. A hard drive on one Mark IV can be switched with another Mark IV hard drive - nothing unique to the specific piano.

Easiest way (without a hard driver cloner) is to use Mark IV Rescue discs (3) and install them to the blank hard drive, with it in the piano. An older firmware version (v3.0) is installed. From there, you can update to the current firmware using Network Update.

To do the rescue requires pushing a couple of buttons, in sequence on the IO Center.

The Rescue Discs are created using 3 ISO files.

I have the files and installation instructions, if anyone needs them. Send me a private email and I will give you links to these files.

RE: [disklavier] Urgent matter

2014-11-26 by Geoff Ward

In view of the drama that a failed hard disk drive causes, I think I will clone my Mark IV hard disk using Norton Ghost on my PC (I also have Linux Ghost which works with Windows 7). Can anyone say whether a solid state drive will improve the boot-up time – currently about 2.5 minutes.

Kind regards

Geoff

Julien, if it turns out that the hard drive needs to be replaced, I recommend that you replace it with an SSD drive and enjoy improved performance. I have never replaced the SSD in a Mark IV, but there are individuals on this list who have.

Re: [disklavier] Floppy Drive

2014-11-27 by Bill Brandom

Joseph, (not laughing...) you can use an off the shelf floppy drive with the DKC-850, but most cannot read Yamaha protected files (if you have Yamaha PianoSoft floppies, they are protected.)

Yamaha sells a UDFD01 floppy drive that works well with Yamaha floppies.

I have found two other external floppy drives that also work with Yamaha floppies:

Iomega #32633
LaCie #706018

Re: [disklavier] Floppy Drive

2014-11-27 by whymark@...

speaking of floppies and floppy drives....I just purchased two Teac external floppy drives...one for my computer and one for the DKC 850.....both are having trouble reading (all of a sudden)...I get a message that they need to be formatted when I know they contain MIDI files....I've been using standard off-the-shelf floppies for ears with the DKC500 xrg with no problem....about 0.001% of the time, I can disconnect them from the USB port and they will read correctly but, this is a crap shoot at best....anybody else having trouble like this???

Re: [disklavier] Floppy Drive

2014-11-28 by Bill Brandom

Yes. However, I recommend that you copy the album from the floppy to the internal memory of the DKC-850. Then you can play the MIDI files internally and they will find the correct audio files on the CD.

I recommend that you copy all of your floppies to the internal memory of the DKC-850, then remove the floppy drive and put your floppies away and keep them as backups.

Re: [disklavier] Floppy Drive

2014-11-28 by James Fry

I would go further than that and say you should get software for your PC that can read the disks (Yamaha's attempt at copy protection is almost laughable) and copy the files to your PC then store them on modern media you can regularly backup - even more so if you have disks of performances you've recorded yourself. Floppy disks, especially most of the more recent ones, were often poorly made and are rapidly starting to fail.

I've just purchased a Kryoflux (http://www.kryoflux.com/) so I can image the disks I've got for my old BBC / Amiga computers and various synths / pianos that used floppy disks so I can rescue compositions and sequences I made. A number of the disks were already unreadable in a modern USB floppy drive, but this has let me make accurate images of what is left on the disk and then attempt to rescue the files.

Regards,

James

Re: [disklavier] Floppy Drive

I bought a cheap external floppy drive for $10, then using a converter program available from this group copied all Yamaha floppies to computer hard drive. I recommend everyone with older DKVs do this.

Floppy disks, especially most of the more recent ones, were often poorly made and are rapidly starting to fail.

Re: [disklavier] Floppy Drive

2014-11-29 by PianoBench@...

Good evening, everyone.

Mark, I am wondering if you have a mixture of double-density (DD) floppies and high-density (HD) floppies, all of which are formatted as DD disks. If so, that would explain why they used to work in the DKC500 xrg but may not work in a newer device.

Many of the older Disklavier control units did not know the difference between DD and HD disks. Although I am not certain, this may be the case with your DKC500 xrg. If so, disks that were formatted in the old control unit would have been formatted as DD disks even if they were HD disks. Newer drives and operating systems, however, know the difference between a DD and an HD disk (because the HD disk has a permanent hole on one side). The newer devices look at HD disks and expect HD formatting and are stumped when the disk was formatted as DD.

If this scenario fits your situation, use a piece of tape to cover over the permanent hole in the HD disks and try reading them again.

Regards,
PianoBench

For those needing it, here are instructions for formatting a HD or DD floppy disk to 720k. If the disk is HD cover the extra hole with adhesive tape.

Formatting a 720kB floppy disk with Windows XP

1) Cover the square hole in the corner of the 1.44M floppy with a piece of tape

(there should be two holes - you want to cover the one WITHOUT the

write-protect shutter). If you hold the disk parallel to the floor, with

the label side up and the metal shutter away from you, it will be the hole

on the right.

2) Open a DOS window. (select “Run” in Windows 7 from the Start menu, type

cmd into the box and press enter to open up a DOS box.

3) Type in the DOS command "FORMAT A: /T:80 /N:9" and press enter and follow

the prompts.

(Windows XP doesn't support the /F:720 switch anymore, but explicitly

defining the number of sectors and tracks works just fine.)

4) This works with Windows 7 as well.

Kind regards

Geoff

Just be warned that a lot of DD drives will be unable to read a disk formatted in this way, especially if it has been used before (in some cases even if it was just formatted as 1.44MB first). It is generally better to format on the DD drive (ie the Disklavier) and then read in a PC once the hole has been taped over.

good evening and many thanks for the tips...I taped up the permanent hole on the floppy and ran the format from the DOS window...the disc changed format to FAT and told me that it wasn't supported??!!!...When I tried to xfer a MIDI file from the pc I got a message (again) that the disc needed to be formatted???!!!!....If I weren't already bald, I'd pull my hair out.....I'll connect the old 500 to the 850 with MIDI IN and MIDI OUT and change the settings on the 850 to ADD instead of REPLACE and see if I can get a better handle on this......what gets me is that the discs were all reading just fine befor "something" happened.....ACCKKK technology!!

Thanks Bill

The most common solid state drives are 2.5inch SATA. I was surprised to find that my Mark IV has an old technology parallel (PATA) 3.5” drive. It’s easy to use a 3.5” to 2.5” converter bracket for mounting. But, which type of drive?

Option 1 – find a 128GB PATA solid state drive – slow max of 133MB/s and not common. They also might not be available for much longer; or

Option 2 – buy a faster (500MB/s) 128GB SATA SS drive and pair it up with an IDE to SATA converter board – not sure about the performance of such a board, but they are available. The speed is probably limited by the Mark IV interface to something less than 133MB/s in any event.

Could you or any other reader who has done this please tell me which approach you believe is best. I would prefer option 2 if it is viable.

Kind regards

Hi Geoff,

For the last 2 SSDs, I have used option 2 with no problems. I use a PATA to SATA Interface Adapter to make the connections.

I am making 2 - Samsung 850 PRO 128GB SSDs into Mark IV drives this weekend, doing it as I have before.

Floppy Drive

2016-02-12 by Gmail

Hi All,
I am one of the original people that got a floppy drive Emulator working with my disklavier Mx-80 piano.
I love it since I never have to swap floppys. You just select a different floppy image that is stored on the
SD card on the emulator menu and the piano controller acts exactly as if you inserted a new floppy.
There is some work in copying and converting the floppys to the SD card.
A standard IBM floppy drive will NOT work. These were not the original standards when floppy drives first
came out. The first floppy drives had what is called a SHUGART interface. The ribbon cable and pins are
the same but the pin functions are not. Looking over the schematics for my piano, (Thanks for getting them
for me Bill) I was able to figure out what interface and functions I needed.
Any emulator that supports the Shugart interface should work. I used the Lotharek HXC floppy emulator which
works great. Sells for about $100. I am assuming the Mx100 has the same interface, but I have not looked at
the schematics.

Hello all!

Eric is correct about the differences in the floppy drives... I had to understand the same differences when I replaced my floppy with the same upgrade that Eric used. And btw it was money well spent, as I love the convenience.

Cheers!
