Greetings DPO Forum!

After a year long deployment in Afghanistan I have been rewarded with a move to Seoul S. Korea where I expect to live on post (Yongsan). The Army will pay for either shipping my GC1 or for longterm non-climate controlled storage in Oklahoma; thus I have a decision to make:

1) Ship the piano to S Korea and hope the piano will survive the ocean voyage and fit inside the on post housing;

2) Place the piano in less than ideal storage at Army expense; or,

3) Pay for storage in a climate controlled environment for 2 years and then the subsequent move from storage to wherever I end up next.

I prefer decision 1 but all those I know in Korea have discouraged my desire to bring the piano due to risks involved with moving the piano across the ocean and prospective space limitations. Number 2 is good because the Army will ship it to my next duty station so I will save on storage and future shipping costs but, although it will be insured against damage, I anticipate filing a claim due to damage from the piano's being stored in OK in an uncontrolled environment. Number 3 is good because it will be most likely safe but I will be left footing the bill for storage and future shipping. A final decision is still pending, but I wanted to find out first if anyone on this forum has any experience with Yongsan and if so, if there were any shipping tips they'd care to share.

Alternatively, any insight as to the likelihood of the piano fairing poorly OK (where it can get both fairly hot or fairly cold) or two years in a sheltered, but uncontrolled environment would be useful to know.

Finally, any idea as to what a reasonable cost would be to ship the piano from Dallas to Seoul? Any insight and/or guidance would be appreciated.

Do you know someone who could borrow the piano for a while? If you don't 
know anyone personally, what about a school or maybe an assisted living 
facility? Long term storage in poor conditions could be terrible if the 
conditions are truly bad or not a big deal if not extreme. How much will 
the humidity vary in the long and short terms. I assume there will at 
least be no rodents?

I moved a DC7A (C7 disklavier) from the States to SE Asia. I pulled the keyboard and restrained the hammers as it would be on it's side for a long time.  Then wrapped, crated and loaded in a 40 foot container and had it shipped along with all our other household goods.  It took over a month to get it,  but it got here fine with no trouble.  I did the wrapping/crating myself as I didn't want to take any chances.  I did pay for the extra insurance as I was worried.  I also had to pay insurance for what it would cost to replace here, which is about 3 times what it would cost in the States.  It was a costly move and lots of work  but I'm glad I have it.  I wasn't going to leave it behind.

Okay, I am still not used to Yahoo's forum format so I hope I do not leave anyone out that's been kind enough to respond.
First, to Spencer and Wandamusic, we did a cursory search into finding someone to babysit the piano but most people I knew within the local community prior to my deployment have since moved on and those I currently know are due to move on before my return.  I think if had some lead time or lived in a robust metro area this would be a viable option though you never know what might turn up.  As for storage, I of course cannot be certain there would be a lack of rodents, but I am not aware of that being a problem with long term storage.
Second, glad to hear Joe Palmer managed it.  Also, I have contacted on-post housing and they seem to think that getting the piano into housing "should not" be an issue.  Given this I am willing to risk it.  Not to mention the fact that it too will be insured while in transit.  I will make sure the movers minimally follow Joe's guidance.  Movers should be here on Friday, barring my finding someone to babysit the piano for me.  Let the adventure begin.
