speakers for disklavier

2016-06-05 by mateo sell

Hello! We have quickly realized that having a pair of small speakers (just to use in our home, not performance or large setting) would be very helpful. I could not find specific information in the manuals nor the internet.

~ Our MarkIIXG unit only has host & midi in/out connections in the back of the box, so I assume we’d have to pass a speaker cables into a headphone jack of the silent unit … Correct?

~ In order to not have cables dangling off the headphone jacks of the silent unit and around to the speakers, I assume we could use a bluetooth transmitter plugged into the headphone jacks that would send signal to AC powered speakers?

~ What type of speakers would we need to keep pace with the possibilities of the disklavier? I am completely clueless … mono/stereo, monitor, etc.

~ Are there a pair of small low profile speakers that most people use in their homes for their disklavier that don’t have built in speakers?

Thank your for your help and any suggestions!,

Matt

if you care about quality of sound i would not use bluetooth speakers.
wires are very reliable, bluetooth often is not. we have a wide range of
bluetooth speakers and the best of them (sound quality is very good for
smallish speakers) works most of the time but screws up often enough
that i would not use it unless it is very close and there are no sources
of interference.

some things work ok with bluetooth and it is much better than it used to
be but it is still not equal to the simple wired connection.

Spencer, that makes good sense about bluetooth. I too am a person that wants to "hard wire" when possible ... and looking at the piano ... assuming the connection is through a headphone jack ... I could go back > down > and under with a wire and not around the side of the piano. I think hard wire is the best option (and seems much cheaper too).

My suggestion is to get a pair of powered speakers and mount them under the piano on swivel mounts.
The audio output on the dkv is weak. Also you'll avoid wires across the room and all of the sounds will be emanating from the piano's position.

You will find an AUX out (stereo mini pin) jack on the back of the Silent box. Use that for your audio output, not the headphone jack.

Matt,
I use Yamaha powered monitor speakers model MSP3 that work and sound great. They are not cheap but are built like a tank.

Bill, thanks! I would have never thought to climb under the piano and look at the back of the unit!

I saw another input on the inside (toward the center of the piano) on the silent box. What is that for?

Thanks,

Matt

There is both an AUX IN and AUX OUT. You will use the AUX OUT to get audio to your speakers or sound system.

The AUX IN allows you to send audio INTO the piano. This function is rarely used, because there isn't much reason to send audio into the piano.

Good afternoon, everyone.

I echo the sentiment to avoid using Bluetooth speakers with a Disklavier. A big reason to avoid them is that Bluetooth speakers have latency, which means that the piano will not be in sync with the MIDI or audio data.

Re: speakers for disklavier

I had XG sound problems for some time with my MkIIXG - non silent - piano. 1999 model and still going strong. I tried a few powered speakers and as was pointed out above, the audio output on the DKC is weak. I solved the problem using a small pre-amp I purchased from a US company via eBay. I fed this from the auxiliary jack on the DKC into the pre-amp and then into my 5.1 main stereo system.

If you want to keep it simple, Yamaha powered speakers may work for you. If not you may need to add a simple pre-amp.

Ken, do you recall the brand of the pre amp?
