Would anyone care to summarize the differences between Disklavier II and III, and offer their thoughts on when Disklavier III might find its' way into the upright series. Also, does anyone have any first hand experience using PianoDisc recordings in their Disklavier? Floppy? CD? Thanks. Gary Schaps

The Mark III has already found its way into the upright series. It is available on a console piano, MX500, and two studio models, the P22 and the T116. The Mark III in the upright does not include incremental pedaling (pedal is either on or off), and does not have hammer sensors. But you can add to it the new Yamaha CD player. The Mark III in grand pianos includes speakers, a CD player, Silent Mode and Smart Key. It also has 16 memory disks instead of the 1 available on the MarkIIXG. Is it possible to add hammer sensors to a Mark III DC1A? How much difference does not having these make in the quality of recording and playback? Jeff C

It would make no sense at all. In a DC1, DC2, or DGH1B grand piano, the Mark III Disklavier is more than a MarkIIXG system without hammer sensors. The key sensors are calibrated differently. The software in the ROM is different. I do not believe there is any appreciable difference in recordings made on these pianos, than the same models with hammer sensors. The playback is the same. In fact the Mark III is capable of a very large dynamic range both in recording and playback. My impression of the MarkIII is that it is newer technology to take advantage of the advanced sound capabilities of newer tone generators. It takes XG to a higher level. It also meets customer demand to be able to play live piano music off CDs as well as listen to audio at the same time. It can play digital audio and MIDI at the same time from a CD, and does Smart Key. The software design uses the newest flash ROMs so that it is easily updated. The solenoid technology is more modern. The big difference, and big bucks as well, is between the regular DKVs and the Pro models. Hi All - There is a press release on the Yamaha web site entitled "Yamaha Introduces Mark III Disklavier Upright". It describes a new "DU1A Disklavier Mark III Upright" which was introduced a the winter NAMM 2002 (trade show in Anaheim, CA - ends this week).
