Hi,

I have a DKC500R-XG controller for my Disklavier.

It has a PC attached with a DB9 to mini DIN8 cable to the "To Host" port. Old, but it has been serviceable.

Now the PC needs to be replaced and I am having trouble identifying the cable and driver (for Windows 7) required to go from USB to the To Host (mini DIN).

Could someone please advise me.

Hello I dont know much... but once was told to calibrate with the original "old box" that came with the disklavier (thus removing the dkc-850)...

there has not been enough interest to justify the time it would take to
put this all together. i wrote a while ago explaining how to do this
with programs currently available on my website. i am pasting that
information again here.

the method can be tested by downloading the "keyword tools" and also the
keyword to excel program from the download page of my web site. The
keyword lister will only list keyworded text events which follow the
format name: value. this is explained in the doc included withe the
keywords tools zip. it also list track names which are the most common
way people add meta data. there are too many other ways to add meta data
so i only bother with these two to avoid overload of information. i can
modify the program if anyone has a favorite text type they would like to
add to the list.

the current version of the programs default to the working folder which
is convenient. i believe that the versions on the web site use a default
folder which can be created and used or it can be changed each time the
program is run. to update this zip with the current version and make
sure the documentation is correct will be a little work which i will
only do if there is enough interest.

MIDI keyword tools zip is near the end. if you use any of the programs
on this site, i recommend getting the latest versions from me if you are
really going to use them a lot. i have mad improvements but they are not

Good morning, everyone.

Peter, although it may be possible to get this to work, I think that you are swimming up stream by trying to do this on a PC. Basically, you are attempting to bridge USB communication with serial communication.

On the serial side, a driver may be required—I’m not sure.

On the USB side, your MIDI software needs to recognize your USB cable as either a MIDI device or as a cable connected to a MIDI device. I don’t think that there is a “normal” way to get that to happen without either special hardware or software.

Although I don’t suggest going down this path, I’ll point out that Yamaha used to make a USB MIDI interface called the UX96. The UX96 connected to the computer by USB and had both MIDI ports and a serial port for connecting to a keyboard. If there was some reason that you absolutely had to use the serial port on your Disklavier, this piece of hardware would provide the simplest way to bridge USB and serial MIDI communications. The UX96 requires the standard Yamaha USB MIDI driver to be installed on the PC.

You would be much better off getting a modern Windows-compatible USB MIDI interface that connects to the piano’s MIDI ports. If you do so, be sure to flip the 4-position toggle switch to the “MIDI” setting on the DKC500RXG.

An advantage of using MIDI cables is that you can run a long length of cable if you need to.

Lastly, I’ll mention the cleanest but most expensive option: replace the DKC500RXG with a DKC-850. This will give you both a MIDI port option as well as the option to use a direct USB cable connection.
