New version of floppy backup utility posted

2017-06-13 by Mark Fontana

For anyone who uses my floppy backup/extraction utility PPFBU, a new
version is available at http://www.kinura.net/ppfbu/

Version 1.2 adds support for 1.44 MB Disklavier and PianoDisc diskettes,
plus support for Disk Orchestra Collection albums. Read error recovery
has been improved as well, though a lot depends on how well a particular
floppy drive handles old, worn media. In the event of failure, trying a
different drive can sometimes make a difference.

I have a variety of drives on hand, including genuine 720 KB drives
connected to a motherboard-based floppy controller. If anyone has
precious, homemade material that they're unable to read, get in touch
privately and I'll try to help.

Mark,

That's great news and the DKV community will benefit from your passion, skill, time, and ongoing technical support.

I've had great success using the previous version of your PPFBU utility and look forward to cutting over to the latest version.

Also, I've been meaning to make a donation, and the new PPFBU version serves as a reminder and perfect opportunity to do so.

Thanks again . . . / Robert

Thanks
Does this utility allow me to read my Yamaha flopies on my computer and play them or put them on a memory stick and play them on my clavinva?

Yes. It can extract the performances to MIDI format, which you can then
play using MIDI player software, digital pianos, etc. It can also
extract the original disk contents (usually in ESEQ format), archive the
original disk image for use with floppy emulators, etc. It's similar in
capability to the Giebler Yamaha Diskette Manager program from the
1990s, except that I haven't implemented the ability to author new
diskettes, as the market for that seems pretty small.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
