Changing Track # on MIDI files on MAC

Changing Track # on MIDI files on MAC

2019-03-20 by r.fasciani@...

Hello to everybody,

I have a C3 Disklavier from 10 years, most time playing, some times hearing MIDI collected in several ways. Even scanning sheets and correct them manually via Finale, Sibelius etc. creating MIDI.
Then, the last touch, I used Cubase to assign tracks numbers for 1 and 2 and make them playable on disklavier. Also to stress dynamics to the maximum value (resolution).
I worked a lot with PC, then some years ago I migrated to a Mac.

Now, after some years I want again collecting MIDI and I try to use only a MAC to make all the work and transfer the file to the Disklavier.
I used some times DKVBrowser to assign tracks, but now I cannot use it anymore on an updated Mac.

I also wish to avoid to get Cubase only to change tracks.

Can you suggest me the simplest software to edit MIDI and change Tracks on a MAC?
And also to recover 4 hands MIDI on 2 tracks only (that's a more difficult task...)?

Thanks in advance.
Roberto

Not sure this works in your Disklavier but are the files prevented in alphabetical/numerical order?

With other devices and even my Disklavier Enspire I name the folders with 2 numerical digits as well as each of the midi files so I can control the order with the numbers.

Good luck.

Roberto,

I can't fault MidiSwing. It is simple and intuitive and does so many things for me in midi – for free.

Hello Ian,
thanks for your suggestion. I forgot to write that I have already tried MidiSwing.
It allows a lot of things but I cannot use it to make four hands MIDI playable on a Disklavier.
This nice piece for instance...
http://www.kunstderfuge.com/-/midi.asp?file=31/gottschalk_rossini_william_tell_4_hands_part-2_(c)yogore.mid

I need to overlap parts to use only 2 tracks (or channels, if you prefer), because Disklavier cannot manage two tracks on the same channel.

If you use a usual MIDIs for two hands, this problem does not arise.

Roberto,

A crude shortcut, to enable you to get all tracks onto one midi file is as follows:
Using MidiSwing, is to open the file; Command A (copy all); Menu - File - New SFM0 – Command V (paste all) then readjust the tempo.
There are much finer 'performances of William Tell freely available on-line.

There are very good and not very good midis available from the internet. You can do a lot better than that midi.
I know the site you mention. I subscribe to it. There some wonderful performances on it from reproducing piano rolls and some from skilled living pianists. Look for the yellow 'Historic Performances"' and "Live Quality". Please don't waste your time on poor quality sequences when there is so many great 'live' performances available.

Many midi files, like the one you mention, have been scanned from scores and converted to midi. These are possibly useful for study purposes but they are produced by a computer, not a pianist and, like the little gift cards that play tunes when you open them, they are mechanical, not musical. Your piano is capable of astonishing concert performance realism and you really can't get that realism from 'sequenced' midis.

Go to http://yamahaden.com/midi-files or search for Spencer Chase or Terry Smythe archives ; Search 'midi' with any of the following names: Oguri; Ozaki; Tryon; Doug McKenzie; Lubetsky; Carter. Finley; Bill Edwards; Fracalanza; Giulimondi; Lloyd; Bob Mace, all of whom have freely available midis of outstanding pianism.

Alternately, if you are serious about quality reproduction, then buy some files, as I have, in bulk from https://www.petersmidi.com/

Good luck,
