Moving a Disklavier

2019-07-12 by rednebmb@...

Hello all. I am writing to ask for advice. I have an upright 44" Disklavier that I purchased new in 1999. It has remained in the same place in my home in NJ for the last 20 years and has provided much enjoyment to me, my family and our friends. The model is visually similar to the current Yamaha M560, except that it is a Disklavier.

I am moving to Southwest Florida next year and I want to take our piano with us. I welcome all advice from the knowledgeable people in this forum. Do I need a dedicated piano mover? Any recommendations on trustworthy movers in central NJ is also welcome.

Thanks, Brian

I have a friend doing a cross country move with the same piano. The regular mover is also moving the piano. I do not think you need a separate piano mover, the Yamaha upright is not a very heavy or difficult piano to move. Be sure to have them pad the piano very well. Also be sure you have full value coverage not by the pound. Be sure to lock the front panel and close the top. If the top is going to be tightly strapped down be sure that there are some spacers between the top and the cabinet to spread the force so it is not just on small bumpers and or hinges. A carefully tensioned strap will not cause damage but better to be safe than to have a bent hinge or worse.

Google Modern Piano moving. I had them move mine from San Diego to Iowa. Very professional. They service all of the US.
