Convertion app or software for MIDI files

Convertion app or software for MIDI files

2019-03-08 by samanian_k@...

Dear all,

Thank you for this great group.
I am new member here and could not find a topic or discussion regarding my problem. Sorry if my questions have answered before.
I got new Disklavier Enspier Enst system and faced to the following issues. Would you please answer my questions?
1. Is it possible to play all midi files by yamaha disklavier system or there is any restriction or specification for it?
2. Is there any app or software to convert mp3 or wave audio files to MiDi format then use it by disklavier piano?
Please let me know if you have any experiences regarding the above issues.
Thank you for your time

Re: Enspire Conversion app or software for MIDI files

2019-03-08 by Ian

Kouros,

I have the Enspire direct wired from my mac computer via USB to midi input. It works beautifully. There are very cheap cables available but it is not advisable to buy them as they often play with dropouts. Get a known brand name such as Roland, for perfect performance.
I use it to OPTIMISE midis for perfect playback, always at 70% full volume, which is 3.5/5 yellow lights on the control face.
1) YES, all midis will play on it – even those with no piano track, as they play thru the loudspeakers under the piano.
2) There IS software to convert mp3 or wav to midi and you can trial it for free but it is but it gives very disappointing results and is costly. An analogy is that trying to create midi from an audio file is like trying to reassemble vegetables from vegetable soup: It works better the other way around. What pieces have you in mind to convert? I may have them converted already.

Thousands of great files are available on the internet for piano – particularly classical piano pieces from old reproducing piano rolls which have the full expression of dynamics and phrasing encoded into them.

I can direct you to various sites for collections.

Dear Ian,

Thank you very much for your kind attention. As i got my piano recently i have become so excited about it and would like to hear my lovely musics via it.
I am interested to have midi files of Yanni and Kitaro (new age music) for piano. My disklavier piano has arrived without speaker and the company told me that i have to order it sepertly which takes time.
I have searched through internet and found some free midi files such as this page:

http://www.sortmusic.com/_y/yanni-free-midi-files,len.html

But it does not work with mine as there is no piano track and disklavier does not play them.

Please let me know if you now any good sources or website for this purpose.

I am emailing you if you can kindly help.

Kouros,

I have opened the Yanni page and downloaded one to try. It is "Reflections of Passion"

It has 2 midi channels on the file I opened. One is synthesised piano which plays thru speakers and the other which plays your live piano (disklavier).

I have midi editing software which allows me to put all channels thru the live piano. Here is the result: YANNI – Reflections of Passion.mid

that is one serious mess of a MIDI file. did you look at it in a sequencer? it is a total disaster.

i like the analogy to vegetable soup. also agree about the cheap MIDI interfaces. they can seem to work fine and then you end up spending hours trying to figure WTF went wrong and it turns out to be the MIDI interface. the hardware part is easy , the drivers are another mater. stick with Roland Yamaha or M-Audio. i do have some cheapies that i got at a thrift store and they do work but ???

what "editing software" did you use to combine channels? i does not seem to know what to do with overlapping notes which result from merging channels. if perchance, you used my remap channels program, you did not select the option to fix overlaps,.

Ha ha! Good to see you looking over my shoulder, Spencer.

YES, unfortunately the files that Kouros wants to open are dreadful, but he can hear just how dreadful – as the file will now play on his Enspire without destroying it.

Your utilities are legendary, but inaccessible to me. I used only MidiSwing (for Mac) and in an unapproved manner to create a playable file very quickly for Kouros.

Good Afternoon:

Does anyone have, or can anyone in the group record the title "Memphis
Stomp" by Dave Grusin

It is from the movie "The Firm"

Yamaha included the title track of the film (by Mike Garson) on a
sampler disk, but I have never been able to find a midi of this piano
solo title - to my knowledge\ufffd Yamaha does not offer it for sale

I wish I had the skills to play it myself - it is a fast paced jazz song

Thanks to all

van bascos karaoke player is free. you need a usb to midi interface if you don't have one. Yamaha makes one, also M Audio and Roland. cheap Chinese ones also are available but not as reliable and might not have win 10 drivers. do not buy used Roland or M Audio adapters unless you know they are the newer ones that are win 10 compatible.

Are you using a DKV?
An old model?

Yes? Maybe you need an USB to MIDI Interface.

I think that vanBasco karaoke player will be enough. Very old program still working.

Re: [disklavier] Re: MIDI files

Glen, unless you are using Floppies or CDs, a USB to midi-in cable will be necessary for whatever you are using to play the midis from your computer. Buy a reputable make like Roland, because the cheap Chinese-made ones do not always work properly. They may play, but disappointingly in comparison.

Wireless plugs – can be fitted into Midi-in & Midi-out sockets – (via Bluetooth I believe) and are an alternative to cable.

Although any midi player should work, every midi will seem to need a different playback volume, depending on your sources. I always optimise EVERY midi file as soon as I open it, using a simple and free midi editor, MidiSwing, so that the volume on the disklavier setting does not need constant changing.

Disklavier requires midi format Type 0, in order to play, but many are Type 1. MidiSwing will convert them for you and also present the file on screen as a virtual piano roll. Soft notes appear pale blue & loud ones, dark blue. You can adjust any any parameter of any note easily and quickly. It works beautifully on my Mac, but has had mixed reviews on some PCs.

Advantage of using an Editor is in being able to get the exact sound you want, on playback, with dud notes removed and even bad pedalling and tempo corrected. If you decide to use MidiSwing i will send you a tutorial i have written for it.

Re: [disklavier] Re: MIDI files

Actually, I am wanting a more local solution. Eventually, any MIDI files I edit will be played on my Mark III which uses a floppy disk. For editing I need local playback on my PC or laptop. But Windows 10 doesn't support MIDI. In the past, my PCs had sound cards which generated the MIDI voices (I think Creative Labs was an example).

So, I think I need a media player which supports MIDI and a sound generator with decent sounding voices.
Feel free to educate this old guy who just wants to edit MIDI files like he did before Windows 10 (Thank You, Microsoft).
Glen Perry
P.S. I have a USB to MIDI interface and I know how to play files on my Mark III from a laptop. I just want my PC or laptop to play MIDI files through their speakers as I edit and test the results. I've thought about resurrecting an old Windows 7 machine, but, it might need repairing and there is the lack of support by MS (Thanks again) and who has the space for another machine?

Good evening, everyone.

Glen, I recommend that you get the Garritan CFX Concert Grand virtual piano from MakeMusic:

https://www.garritan.com/products/cfx-concert-grand-virtual-piano/

It is a sample 9-foot Yamaha concert grand. Unlike most virtual pianos, it can actually be set to respond to incremental pedal data.

You may want to play around with it’s velocity curve in order to get the results to match the playback of your piano.

Regards,
PianoBench
