.FIL files to .MID

.FIL files to .MID

2019-08-11 by kassey22000@...

Hi, with the help of a very nice contributor on here I was able to convert most of my library of Pianosoft albums from .Fil to .Mid using the utility YamPlayr (in batches :-). This saved hours of time.

However it prompted an observation and question. Every single .FIL song/file shrunk in size once converted with YamPlayr v1.1 (even XP/e-comp songs/files). Does anyone know if important data is being stripped out in this process?

This is all necessary if you have a large library of Pianosoft music (like many have) and you want to upgrade to the new (and very nice) Enspire pianos. Still no word from Corp on why this file format was dropped (even though Enspire pianos can read .Wav, .Mid, & .MP3 files.

Currently there is no conversion solution for Pianosoft plus Audio CD or Smart Pianosoft albums. Using the awesome Mid2PianoCD utility will help sync some Smart Pianosoft combinations, yet it won't work for all - requiring some tedious manipulation with synchronizing software.

Just waiting for some more help from the good folks in Buena Park on some tech/media questions before I submit my review of the Enspire Pro models.

PS if there are any Enspire owners who would be willing to try a simple test, please contact me.

Happy music making :-)

Keith, I have never examined the results of converting ESEQ->SMF using
Yamplayer to verify whether it's correct or not, but I have implemented
code for reading ESEQ files. ESEQ files tend to be larger than the
corresponding MIDI files due to a less-efficient scheme of representing
the delta times between events. Something else that can make them
larger is the presence of a "program-dependent" block of data that has
no direct translation to MIDI format and would typically be omitted.
The program-dependent data block hasn't been documented by Yamaha, but
two items I know it contains are the title of the track, as formatted
for the two-line LCD of early Disklaviers, plus the original tempo
setting for the track. The program-dependent data block for Disklavier
ESEQ files is usually 80 bytes in size.

Regarding Pianosoft Plus Audio support, have you tested whether Enspire
can play WAV files ripped from Pianosoft Plus Audio CDs (i.e. WAV files
that have that shrill dialtone-like encoding on one channel and monaural
accompaniment audio on the other)? Yamaha had suggested in the past
that it might be necessary to convert these to Enspire-style "Pianosoft
Audio" file pairs (song.mid+song.mp3) but has not offered a process for
obtaining these conversions.

Hey Mark,
Great breakdown of the data!

I'm not sure the songs are playing exactly the same and especially with XP titles (the differences can be subtle with many performances). I hope others will be able to compare song to song (ESEQ & subsequent midi files). I traded in the DKC-850 with the C5 Pro so I have no way to compare by ear.

Pianosoft Plus Audio CDs ripped to .wav or MP3 won't play properly on the Enspire because of the new file/song format. You hear the midi info with the audio output. I understand the desire to have full stereo yet the conversion of these great albums is tedious at best for Yamaha and certainly the owners of these amazing pianos. More on this later.

I have to say the new Premium Disklavier Radio stations for the Enspire are pretty awesome! Listing to the Rock and Soul station now :-)

Sent you a more detailed email directly.

Thanks!
