Mark IV Disklavier acoustic piano not playing

2019-10-08 by lloyd.randolph@...

I am encountering the problem described above and seek your help in diagnosing the cause and making necessary corrections.

When I play midi files, the Disklavier is not prompting the acoustic piano to play. That is so both when I use DKVBrowser (even after a re-install and update of Java) and my piano's (vintage!) PRC-100 handheld controller when set for acoustic (instead of quiet mode). When I invoke a file to play, I hear whirring (which I think means an attempt is occurring to invoke the acoustic piano) but the piano's keys are not dropping and so the hammers are not hitting piano's strings.

Curiously, the tracks assigned to instruments other than for the acoustic piano continue to play. And when I place the piano in "quiet" mode, the tracks that the acoustic piano ordinarily would play sometimes are played through speakers as if they were on tracks assigned to accompanying instruments, i.e., the non-acoustic piano tracks.

Any ideas on what may be causing my problem and how I should fix it?

Do I need to replace my aging "media center" (which is old enough that it still has a 3.5" "floppy" drive)? Is the best method for doing this to discuss with my local dealer? Do any of you have experience in replacing a "media center" of this sort? What are the available alternatives to this unit? What should I expect to pay?

Many thanks,

Lloyd Randolph

If this is new behavior for MIDI files that have played in the past. I have had luck power cycling the Disklavier. Pull the plug and wait a few minutes If that fails, see if you can get another file format to play. Start with a PianoSoft file. If that works, then the MIDI files may be corrupted. That may point to a hard drive about to fail. I had to upgrade my to an SSD a few years back after the original hard drive failed. Took some time, but wasn't hard.
