Hi Everyone- Second try on this question: Does anyone have any experience playing PianoDisc recordings on a Disklavier? Thanks. Gary
2002-04-12 by Aaron.Zornes@metagroup.com
I bought about $400 of Piano Discs titles for my DC6A disklavier
over Christmas holiday direct from the vendor in Sacramento
(Internet sales).
*Very* nice people, but I found the dynamics lacking overall in
the players' skills.
I am a musician so it is not an unpolished ear that is being
critical here ... I bought pop, classical and jazz ... and found
they didn't hold up well against PG Music or Yamaha titles.

One in the 40* (original artist, Ferrante/Teicher, Roger Williams) series, and one in the 80* series (Russell Messina). I did not find their production as high quality as Yamaha's and they did appear to have less dynamic control or representation. Gene

PianoDisc recordings should work on a Disklavier. However, those files are in MIDI 0 format. That means that if you have an older DKV model that only plays Eseq format, you need to convert these PianoDisc files first. Hi Sorry to ask, but are we talking about Piano Discs CDs or Piano Disks floppies? Good question! I was referring to floppy disks. I think the CDs work also, but the audio and midi are on different channels than the Yamaha disks. One has audio on the Right, and MIDI information on the left; and the other is just the opposite. I know for sure that the QRS cd's work on the Mark II Disklaviers with the Midiman conversion box, but I have never tried the PianoDisc CDs. On the Mark III DKVs with the built in CD player, I doubt that PianoDisc CDs play the audio as well as the MIDI. But then again, I have not tried them. I don't think anyone has figured out a way to take files off the CDs, whether they are Yamaha, QRS or PianoDisc, and convert or edit them. If so, I would certainly like to know how the MIDI track was separated from the audio track. That's the reason I think the floppies are more useful than CDs. I didn't buy my Disklavier to listen to people singing, but that's just my own preference. Good morning, everyone. In a message dated 4/13/02 10:12:07 PM, Carol writes: << I think the CDs work also, but the audio and midi are on different channels than the Yamaha disks. The reverse is not true; the other systems will not play Yamaha CDs. The Yamaha CD system goes well beyond the capability of the other systems by offering full, 16-channel, MIDI with the complete spectrum of note velocities. In other words, the MIDI data is much higher resolution on the Yamaha system. <<I don't think anyone has figured out a way to take files off the CDs, whether they are Yamaha, QRS or PianoDisc, and convert or edit them. (You could certain do this with the DCD1 because it connects to the Disklavier with MIDI cables.) On a Mark III, try setting MIDI Out=ESBL Out and PianoPart ESBL Out=On and see if the MIDI data comes shooting out the MIDI Out port. Regards, PianoBench
