Thank you for a great site.

Thank you for a great site.

2002-10-15 by Jimmy

Hello,

Let me introduce myself as a new group member. My name is: Jimmy and
I'm from Montreal, Canada.
I'm no maestro, I have just started to learn to play piano 2 years
ago, one of my childhood's dream. I have bought my first piano and
it is,as you probably know, a Disklavier (DGA1-XG, 4.11" Ebony).
Great pleasure to listen and play on that beautiful instrument, great
sound. However, this fall I have been offered by the store to
upgrade to the newer DGC1A 5.3" at a low cost. I am considering the
option with the full package of the CD's play back and recording
capability.

Let me thank all of you who have been contributing member to this
site and made it what it is. A more personal thank you note for the
member who made possible the "DVKutil package". Personnaly I have
been using the Giebler software for the past 2 years and it is also a
nice software to use and make great diskette. If I had discovered
your site sooner it would have been also a greater benefit. I have
already posted to your "files section" 180 files from Bobs'midi, and
I will try to include more as time come. It the past 2 years I have
corrected and made many diskettes for my piano and I will attempt to
make them available to you.

Feel free from time to time to stop and write me an email and if you
are interested in personal exchange of "Disklavier format" music I
would gladly exchange with you on a personal level. I am looking
forward reading your comments and new topics.

Take care for now.

I, too, can't thank the person enough who wrote the dkvutils. Perhaps they
would also like to try their hand at writing a jukebox program that would
play.fil files? :)

If you can pull off getting a DC1A for a low cost - go for it! It is a
bigger and better piano to start with and it tunes better. You also get the
ability to use high density diskettes, have 16 internal memory disks,
ability to use SMF 1 as well as SMF0 files; have Silent Mode, Smart Key, and
now Piano Smart. Plus, it will record as well. What a deal!

Carol,
Have you forgotten about Robert Swirsky's e-seq player? Put an e-seq
floppy into your PC and it plays through your sound card. Unfortunately
this is an old program and won't play from a hard drive and I doubt
Robert wants to update it.

Just to add to the confusion, he named it Dkutils, not to be confused
with the dkvutil suite available on our site. I don't know if this is
what you were looking for, but here it is:
http://www.swixo.com/disklavier/index.html

P.S. Unfortunately, the anonymous (to all but me) author of DKVUTILS
left the group a couple years ago and our praises go unheard.

Thank you! I never knew about Robert's program , but I just downloaded it!
I have emailed someone I know who wrote a jukebox program asking about the

To Carol Beigel

Carol,

I have accepted their offer today, it will be 6000$CDN for the new piano.
They have a policy, within a 2 years period they take your old piano at the
price you paid So I do lose anything on my former DGA1.
Like you said, I will get the full package. I'M looking forward to it. It
should arrive in the next 10 days or so.

By the way, the sales rep was asking, if you are able to copy the CD, with
Clone CD or is there a way to make backup of them.

Thought I would ask. ??? anyone can answer.

I am also very anxious to try the CD with voice, and some recording feature,
however, my repertoire is very narrow for now.

Thanks for answering and giving me your advise.

Hi Todd

I have tried that program but it will not play. Nor will it read from
High Density disks and it won't play Pianosoft Plus.

As you say it won't play from the Hard Drive.

Having over 300 ESEQ disks the thought of converting them all to midi
is too much.

What I want, is a ESEQ player that will read the files on the hard
disk or a CDrom and send the data out via midi to the piano. That way
I can create play lists on the PC and never have to keep getting up
to swap floppies.

Come on someone.

Hi Carol

It is possible, the Eseq data is not unlike that of a midi file. Just
things like the header, tempo and sys ex commands. A friend of mine
wrote a program for the Atari computer to play "Disk Orchestra" disks
which use the same file format. He also wrote a progam that converted
ESEQ to Midi and then remaped the voices to GM.

I use NTI CD maker to make copies of all my CDs. I put the orginals safely
on a shelf and only use copies. When I wear one out, lose it, or scratch
it, I just make another copy. Yamaha CDs can also be duplicated using
simple CD copy software.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Thank you for a great site.

2002-10-16 by Carol Beigel

I think the reason Yamaha uses their proprietary ESEQ format of MIDI files
is to ensure that their PianoSoft disks are backwardly compatible with older
models of Disklaviers. For that reason, I have great respect for this
company. Can you imagine someone purchasing a Disklavier and it only
working for 20 years when the piano will last 50 years? PianoBench probably
knows more specifics on this, but the proprietary format allows
compatibility with pedal data and those elusive controller messages.

I think if I had a library of 300 disks there would certainly be favorite
songs I would categorize, and others I would never play. Maybe on rainy
days I would convert the songs I liked best to MIDI and be able to use
playlists.

If I didn't have such a long "to do" list, I might consider learning how to
write a jukebox program. I wonder about being able to add such a feature to
JAZZ++? This sequencer software is an open format, which to my
understanding means that the code is available to anyone who wants to
improve it. Perhaps someone might be interested in working on this?

Carol,
In the Dvkutil package there is a converter from ESEQ to midi 0 file, have you tried it, very easy to handle and they are carried out in batch file, you can put as many as you want into one file and press the ok buttom, Voilà.
It wouldN,t take you along at all to do it. Happy listening.

Midi Magic
