Playing downlaoding files

Playing downlaoding files

2002-11-15 by thegorens

Most of the MIDI files that I download off the internet bang the keys
of the piano very hard when I play them on the Disklavier. Does
anyone have any suggestions for how to optimize MIDI files for a
Disklavier? Can it be damaging to the piano to play files off the
internet that cause the keys of the Disklavier to be pressed too
hardly?

An easy, quick and dirty solution is to use the veloset program which is
in our dkvutils set of utilities in the files vault on the group site.

Todd,

Do you have recommendations as to the maximum and minimum velocities that
should be set?

For a piece with full dynamic range, I recommend bracketing the
velocities between 22 to 95. You'll find that most concert pieces on
solo PianoSoft diskettes keep to about that range.

The highest MIDI velocity than can be played has a value of 128. Many MIDI
files downloaded from the internet were created on an electronic keyboard,
and yes this can be very damaging to your piano. I find the best range is
between 60 and 75.

Thanks,

The information you provided was very helpful. I knew the veloset
program existed, but wasn't sure exactly what the velocity was
supposed to be set too.

Does anybody know of a good basic midi program for making basic
modifications such as changing what tracks will play on the piano?

PG Music's Power Tracks is inexpensive and will enable you to edit MIDI
files. Various Cakewalk applications will also. You may also be able
to find a shareware program.

A slight clarification: MIDI has 128 valid velocity values. Zero is the
lowest and means "note off"; 127 is the highest value.

Personnaly I have found that a very simple midi program to use and quite extensive in feature is "GNMidi" a simple shareware that you can also try for free.
I have used it a lot and it is the easiest to shift track.

Re: [disklavier] Playing downlaoding files

2002-11-16 by PianoBench@aol.com

Good morning, everyone.

In a message dated 11/15/02 3:32:19 PM, Rob writes:

<< Most of the MIDI files that I download off the internet bang the keys
of the piano very hard when I play them on the Disklavier. Does

Disklavier?>>

Others have given you good advice regarding the issue of note-on velocity.
Also keep in mind that each track in a MIDI file has a Volume parameter
refered to as controller 7. The Disklavier's native controller 7 value is
100. Many MIDI files set this value higher, probably to compensate for the
weak piano sound found in many General MIDI devices, particularly computer
sound cards. When the Disklavier receives a controller 7 value greater than
100 (and the range is 0 to 127), it ends up playing the keys louder than the
note-on velocities would normally imply.

<<Can it be damaging to the piano to play files off the
internet that cause the keys of the Disklavier to be pressed too
hardly? >>

Yes. Normally, if the listening level is comfortable, there should be no
excessive wear on the instrument.

PianoBench
