Happy New Year! Do you get to see 2003 in Holland sooner than us in the
US? (Back in my home it's already next year...)

Your problem involves the types of floppy (720kb/1.44mb) and the types
of MIDI file (0/1/E-SEQ) that your particular Disklavier can use - it
would be easier for the experts in this group to help you if you could
provide the model number of your Disklavier.

Hi Bas,

"DKC-5R" looks like the model number for a control unit, not the
Disklavier itself. Real professionals like PianoBench and Carol might
know them by heart, but I'm less familiar with control unit models. For
the Disklavier's model, you have to look inside the piano. These
pictures are for locating serial numbers but the model number of mine is
right next to the serial:
http://www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/group005/biggrand.htm
http://www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/group005/bigupright.htm

Earlier Disklavier models can only use 720k double density floppy disks,
not the 1.44mb high density floppy disks commonly found in computer
stores. Also, the earliest models can only play Yamaha's E-SEQ files
(extension .FIL), then later models added MIDI type 0, then even later
models added compatibility for MIDI type 1 files.

Whatever the generation your Disklavier is, the most universally
playable format for Disklaviers would be E-SEQ - you can download a
program from the group's file vault to convert MIDI files to E-SEQ:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/disklavier/files/Utility%20Programs/dkvutils.zip
(Also, see if you can find an old 720k floppy to put the files on.)

As to the Yamaha PianoSoft disks, they have a deliberately scrambled
sector to prevent your computer from reading them normally (for copy
protection reasons). However you can find a program in the same
DKVUTILS collection that allows you to get the files out.

Hope this is somewhat helpful so that you can play some new year music
soon!

Good afternoon, everyone.

can someone help me?............it seems that i can't put the disks from my
diskklavier into my
computer floppy drive, is this true?? my comp floppydrive can't read
files from them, what can i do??..............my unit type is: DKC 5R>>

If your control unit is DKC5R, your Disklavier is an MX80 series instrument.
This means that it only reads double-density disks and Yamaha's E-SEQ song
file format. It will not read high density disks nor will it read Standard
MIDI Files (SMFs).

Although many on this list will recommend (and kindly assist you in)
converting SMFs to E-SEQ files, help you find sources for double-density
disks, and make suggestions for how to attach a tone generator to your
instrument, my recommendation is that you add a Yamaha DSR1 to your
Disklavier. This unit will provide you with a built-in tone generator, the
ability to read both types of SMFs (as well as record type 0), and access to
high density disks. Except for Yamaha-published software, you will be able to
go back and forth between computer and Disklavier.

PianoBench
