I just purchased a G1 Mark II with a DKC100R control unit. I downloaded midi files on a preformatted disk. When I put it in the piano, it says "nonformatted disk" Any suggestions? Thanks

This model can only read double-density 720k floppy disks. You can buy them from www.shoplet.com. It will play Yamaha files (Eseq format) and MIDI 0 files. It will not play MIDI format 1 files which are the most numerous on the internet. In order to play MIDI files from the internet, you will need to convert them to MIDI 0 files. There is a free convert utility to do this. I would suggest that you try/purchase the gnmidi ($30) software. Not only does it convert MIDI files to format 0, but has the option to put any instrument on the piano tracks (channels 1 and 2). This model will also play a MIDI file through a sequencer program from a computer connected to a MIDI interface, then to the DKV. There is also the free dkutils software on this website that will let you copy files to a floppy disk that your computer can see as well. Your computer needs to see something written on the boot sector of a floppy. The DKV just ignores this sector. That is how the PianoSoft disks are protected - they cannot be read by your computer without using this utility software. If your Disklavier will not read PianoSoft disks, and keeps giving you the message "Unformatted Disk" then you probably need a new disk drive. mspurcell It can be very difficult these days to find a DD (720K) diskette. So difficult, in fact, that I don't bother doing it. Here's a little trick you can use. Pick up a 3 1/2 disk and look at it from the back side. The back side has the open circle in the middle of the disk. Orient the diskette so the metal sleeve that covers the disk is on the bottom. Now, if you look at the disk in the upper left hand corner there is a write protect tab. You can "open" this window in order to protect your disks from being written on. If you look in the same location on the RIGHT side of the disk, there will be an opening that you can see through. This opening is what tell the disk drive it is a HD disk. If you take a piece of electrical tape (I use that because it is black, but any opaque/solid tape will do) and cover up this tab, it will make your computer/disk drive think you have a 720K diskette. Simply re-format the disk (now a DD 720K diskette) and you should be ready to go. Sorry for the long explanation, I just wanted to make sure the directions were easy to follow.
