new piano smell

2003-04-01 by yamahamale

After months of dreaming, my dc7a pro arrived about a week ago and I
love it! I've been up late every night playing it. My first question
is this: I was wondering if it is normal for a new piano to smell kind
of funky especially after the unit has been powered up for 5 minutes
and especially under the piano. I know I can ask my dealer and I will
but I would also like to ask here. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,
You may be experiencing some normal electrical burn-in, however I did NOT experience the same with my DC7.

Re: [disklavier] new piano smell

2003-04-01 by Carol Beigel

I come across a couple of new pianos every year that have a funky odor. It
goes away after the case dries out in the first year. I think it is a "wet
mahogany" odor that permeates the wood from the veneer on the inside rim.
It's harmless unless the smoke detector goes off!

Re: [disklavier] new piano smell

2003-04-01 by James Fry

It seems a lot of people buying disklavier grands have commented on the
amount of heat that their pianos make - is this normal ? Do the uprights
suffer from the same problems ?

Is it going to damage the piano - ie does the heat pose a threat to the
soundboards etc? (presumably having part of the piano repeatedly gett very
hot and then cooling down rapidly isn't good for it?). Electronics /
solenoids / drive circuitry is bound to get hot, but is it positioned in a
sensible place?

Cheers,

James
