DSR1 More Volume Control

DSR1 More Volume Control

2003-05-02 by fakepopster

Hello! I have a Mx100a. If I add a DSR1 to it, will I have more
control over the volume. It's is currently too loud for dinner
parties. I am aware of the other benefits of a DSR1 and ways toi
sequence down the volume on recordings. I just remember seeing a
later control box with more volume settings. Thanks

Although there are many advantages of adding a DSR1 to your system (using HD
floppy disks, having XG ensemble sounds, both MIDI 1 and MIDI 0 capability)
volume control will not be one of them. Regardless of how many notches are
printed on the "volume" control knob, the default data for velocity is still
100. An upright will still play softer than a grand piano because of the
way the far left pedal (soft) works.

For dinner parties, you could do one of two things:

1) make copies of the songs you want to play, and use the software utilities
(veloset) or Giebler, or gnmidi to adjust the data in the data in the music
files

2) install sound-absorbing foam baffles across the back of the piano. You
could use foam from Markertek and use two layers.

Thank you so much, Carol!

Before I start experimenting with veloset levels, do you (or anyone
else) have an idea of a setting to start with? This is for an
mx100a, living room, carpet, drapes, dinner party is 30 feet away.

Some loss of lighter notes might be acceptable given the music is
just background, anyway.

Thank you (whoever) in advance.

I find the dinner party setting about 30. Never go below 20. I like to
play my own upright DKV at about 60. Remember, once you reset this velocity
number using veloset, the "volume" control knob no longer does anything. I
have had my absolute best results with gnmidi, but veloset is free.
