Tips an experience in usign Disklavier with midi...(1)

2003-05-05 by re_p_g_c

I have just one week with my MPX1Z DISKLAVIER and had been testing
it just to figure out how to use it with MIDI.

Every ting is working fine but I have some minor problems so I need
advice.

I'll post some messages whit this subject to keep a separate track
of each one.
------------------------------------------------------------------
My midi files are volume and velocity balanced to sound fine in my
PC, but when I play them, untouched, in the Disklavier
(Tracks 1 2 for piano parts), the piano sounds really loud and the
XG tone generator sounds with a low volume.

I have edited the tracks and noted that the velocity parameter of
each note in the piano tracks should be between 40 and 70 to sound
nice, and the XG tracks should be between 90 and 127 just to sound,
the volume should be 90 to 127 also.

The questions are:
Is this a normal behavior?
Does the Disklavier respond to the volume control?
Is there in the web a page with tips or tutorials about arranging
midi for the Disklavier?
Have some one some other tips on this.

Tanks

I think I have also had the same problems. You look at the data, with the
velocity numbers okay, and the piano still plays too loud. I do know that
when I use veloset or gnmidi, the problem goes away. I like numbers between
30 and 60 for the piano parts. Velocity is not the same as volume when it
comes to translating midi data into how loud the hammer strikes the string
in a mechanical piano action. You just have to play around with the numbers
to suit your instrument.

The XG loudness is controlled on the DKV control box under the Balance. The
TG (tone generator) balance can be set between 0 and 128. This controls the
XG sounds you hear through the speakers you use.

Silent pianos also have a second built-in amplifier that controls what you
hear through the headphones. I suspect your midi files play just fine at
the settings that sound right for your pc using the headphones.

You can also set the MIDI time delay to 500ms or turn it off.

I know this sounds rather simplistic, but my disklavier grand has a
speaker mounted on the bottom of the piano. The speaker itself has a
volume control. Since you say the piano sounds loud and the XG has a
low volume, why not just turn the volume up on the speaker?

Once everything is in sync, you should be able to adjust volume up
and down for both piano and XG in unison.

Thanks carol, I am a newbie in DKV and don't know what you mean by
veloset and gnmidi.
Can you give me a reference or a link?
Also dont know how to set up the balance beteen 0 and 128, is this
in the manual?

Thanks again.

Veloset is a software program included in the dkvutil in the files section
of this website. It is free. There is also a demo program called gnmidi
that eventually costs $30 if you decide to buy it.

To set the Balance, all you do is push the Balance button (3 buttons under
the volume button) and you will see TG Balance and a number. Just push the
Yes button, or the round knob until that number is 100. The XG sounds
should be plenty loud. If not, turn up your speakers.

Thanks again I'll try that this evening.
My control unit is not XG becouse it is a "silent unit" (I just find
this yesterday), but the sounds are very nice.
