Re: [disklavier] Speakers for DU1A

Re: [disklavier] Speakers for DU1A

I ordered a DU1A today and the salesman showed me two types of Yamaha powered
speakers. One was a larger 60W model with about an 8" speaker that he
recommended using alone or two 20W speakers to use on either side. Each option was
about $650 which I thought was kind of expensive. I have about 6" on the
floor on either side of where I will place the piano so the bigger speaker
probably won't work anyway. The larger speaker sounded nice but I never heard the
20W models. Does anyone have thoughts on what speakers I should use? Any
thoughts on placing them on the floor or on top of the piano lid (or I could
wall/shelf mount 2 small satellites)? I thought I understood that the speaker
output is stereo and I would think that two speakers would be superior. I'm sure I
could get good powered computer speakers or a 3 piece powered satellite/sub
system from Bose or Cambridge Soundworks for less than the $650. Perhaps this
price could be negotiated too since they came down a good bit on the piano
when they realized I was shopping two other dealers. Jeff

The big Yamaha speaker is great, the two little ones are okay. Computer
speakers will not do the trick. You need self powered speakers - ones with
their own amplifiers (which make them quite heavy). I prefer the Advent
speakers you can buy from www.qrsmusic.com that are used on Pianomation
systems. I think they cost about $175 each. If you mount them on a shelf
over the piano, make sure there is clearance for the tuner to open the lid.
I would certainly try to negotiate the price with the dealer!

I have two of the 8 inch Yamaha models and they sound very good. The $650
price tag is nearly triple what you should pay though. (I bought on the
internet for much less.) I started with one speaker and the sound was OK
but missing in depth. Getting the second speaker made a nice difference.
The Advent speaker that Carol mentions for $175 is some good advice. Advent
makes a very good product and I would probably have gone with the Advents if
the piano I purchased direct from Yamaha America at a factory sale had not
come with one of the 8 inch Yamaha's already. Carol is giving sage advice
when she mentions to stay away from the self powered computer speakers.
Considering the sound quality (and cost) of the piano you really need a
solid performing powered speaker capable of high fidelity across the sound
spectrum. A $70 dollar pair of speakers would make the whole system sound
like a cheap jukebox.

Good luck.

It does :)

I have a pair of Creative speakers on my MPX1Z (forerunner to the DU1A)
and they sound rather naff - and they are almost the top of the line (Sub,
2 speakers, digital I/O etc on them). I will definitely be upgrading at
some point soon. They do the job, but the quality is nothing like good
enough really - they sound great on commercial pop CD's and orchestral
stuff, but when you put a piano sound through them they have lots of bass,
lots of top, and a really really funny mid range that makes the sound
really tinny. My JBL EON15G2's sound quite good though but are a bit big
to have in the house :)

James
