MX100B for live performance

MX100B for live performance

2003-10-07 by steinja66

Hi everyone, I'm new to this group, having just purchased a used
MX100B. I have a problem that I thought maybe someone in this group
has a solution for. I would like to use this in a live performance -
however I need to have the keys to some of the songs transposed for
the singers. I am not sure if the MX100B will "transpose" on the
fly, so instead I had the idea that I would use another Yamaha P-150
Electric Piano and hook it up through the MIDI ports. I was able to
get it to work with one small problem. Everytime that I play the P-
150 keyboard, there is a 500msec delay till you hear the
Disklavier. Is there any way to prevent this delay? Maybe there is
something I could purchase (like an upgrade) to prevent this delay?
Any ideas would help?

Thanks.

I believe the MX100B will transpose on the fly. Push the transpose button
(should be the under the + button). Probably pushing + or - will transpose
up or down. If you use the P-150, you will either have to turn off the 500
ms delay on the P-150 out, or turn it off on the DKV incoming. However, I
am not sure that can be switched on either instrument. Check you user's
manuals.

Re: [disklavier] MX100B for live performance

2003-10-07 by Robert Welcyng

I'm going to surmise that Jason would like a means to play the MX100B
from the piano keyboard (not reproduce a pre-recorded file) in a
different key. Many electronic keyboards can do that--you play a piece
in C and, with a twist of the transpose knob, play the same keyboard
keys but your song comes out in the newly selected key. On an acoustic
piano, it takes some skill for a pianist to transpose keys on the fly.

If you think about it, the DKV is a mechanical piano. To accomplish the
above as an electronic keyboard does, the whole keyboard action would
have to shift left or right so that the hammers would strike other strings.

In case Jason meant changing the key of a file being reproduced, that is
trivial. Refer to the user's manual.

You can also remove the 500 msec delay from acoustic DKVs (consult the
manual), but I don't believe you'll care for the resulting sounds. And,
playing a DKV from an external keyboard probably isn't such a neat idea
for reasons that you would discover--difficulty controlling dynamics
coupled with the unrealistic tactile feedback and on/off pedal.

I believe you have two viable options:

1) Transpose the sheet music to the needed key and have the accompanist
play it live that way. (Sibelius or Finale software would be useful here.)

or

2) Forget the piano and accompany with an electronic keyboard and synth
and use the transpose knob.

Re: [disklavier] MX100B for live performance

2003-10-07 by Bill Brandom

Hi Jason,

The Disklavier incorporates a 500msec delay when it receives MIDI data
in order to be able to play more accurately. There is a "secret" mode on
the MX100B called "Realtime MIDI-IN Mode. To access it, power up while
holding in the MIDI button. Continue holding the MIDI button until
MIDIOUT=DELAYOUT is displayed. Release the MIDI button and press the
METRONOME button. The LED on the METRONOME button will light, the LCD
will not change. You are now in Realtime MIDI-IN Mode.

It isn't exactly Realtime in. What you will find is the higher the
velocity of the note data going into the Disklavier, the faster the
Disklavier will respond. For instance, a note with a velocity of 20 will
take 212ms before it is played back by the Disklavier. A note with a
velocity of 127 will take 32ms before it is played back by the
Disklavier. This is the variable range you will experience while in this
mode. By feeding it higher velocities, you can pretty well use the
Disklavier as a "tone generator."

It is possible that your MX100B may not be able to perform in this
mode. It may not have ROMs on the control board that are new enough. The
way to know if your Disklavier can access this mode, try powering up
while depressing the MIDI button with no disk in the disk drive. If the
LCD displays "INSERT DISK", you will need to have new ROMs installed on
the control board of the piano.

I hope this information helps!

Bill Brandom answered the crucial issue. Here are some follow-up thoughts:

If you don't mind the sluggishness between playing a note on your P-150 and hearing it on the Disklavier, you may want to proceed to adjusting the volume response of the Disklavier to incoming MIDI data. I would not be surprised if the instrument seems too loud. If you press the Disklavier's MIDI button, after two seconds you will see a screen on which you can adjust the MIDI In volume level.

As for the transposition issue, this is normally handled by the sending keyboard. I don't know how this is done on the P-150, but it is probably pretty easy. Interestingly, your model of Disklavier will also transpose incoming MIDI data. To do so, press the MIDI button and then press the TRANS/BEAT button to access the screen where you can adjust the MIDI In transposition.

PianoBench

Thanks to Bill Brandom and everyone else, I'm playing on the P-150
and it's sounding out on the MX100B accoustically. It's not
perfect, but I'm a happy camper.

Thanks, Bill.
