Greetings,

I have many programs that do not work on XP and others that work
badly. I have both of my main computers set up with dual boot systems,
XP and Win 98se. I think this is the best combination for doing just
about anything that one needs today. I don't know of any reason to use
win 95 although there might be.

The main reason for this letter is to help save some torture for
others wanting to install a dual boot system. I did it the hard way
and it was a lot of work. If you install xp over an existing OS, you
have the option of using xp's own boot manager but not if you have xp
installed first. You can read all of the information on the web and
spend hours fiddling and maybe do it or maybe not.

Partition magic will let you do it very easily but only if you have
version 8. I had an old copy of version 7 and tried it and it was a
very big job because of all sorts of conflicts between where the boot
manager has to be and what sorts of partitions are allowed to coexist
etc etc. Version 8 lets you do it easily because the boot manager can
be installed on a greater variety of partition types.

It was very surprising to me that Power Quest did not make this very
clear on their web site. There are only a few differences between 7
and 8 but this one is critical. It makes PM useful for exactly what
people would want it for, to ba able to reinstall win 98 after
discovering all the things that don't work once you have xp installed
and all of your apps installed and everything configured and then you
are told you have to uninstall it all so you can put 98 back in first.

Greetings Disklavier Group,

I am in the process of writing a program that modifies MIDI files. So
far it does things that relate mainly to my needs in scanning and
archiving reproducing piano rolls. I am also interested in adding
features that relate to the needs of disklavier users.

The program works on whole directories of files so you don't keep
opening files in cakewalk and or use cal scripts. Most of the
processes do identical things to all files but the program can contain
logic to make all sorts of decisions and treat different situations
differently.

I am not a very experienced programmer, so the really complicated
things will not get done for a long time. It is a windows graphic
program so it is easy to use but I am having some of the typical
problems getting it to work on a variety of machines.

I am writing to the group, mainly to ask what sorts of things people
need to do repeatedly that might be useful to have in the program. So
far, I can do the following and have a list of my own of other
features to add eventually.

Things that is does so far.

change note duration of selected note ranges. (mainly for piano roll
modifications)

shift notes in selected ranges (again for piano roll stuff)

transpose notes in ranges.

move all events to channel 1

copy track names to text events so that converting to midi type 0 will
not lose this information (useful for Terry's files.

fix overlapped notes so they do not end prematurely. this happens in
editing some times when tracks or channels are merged.

set a minimum gap between notes. useful for keyboard recordings that
have too fast repeats for a real piano.

things I will add soon.

shifting and stretching pedal controllers along with notes. this is to
deal with things such as overpedaling or to adapt files for the
adjustment of the pedals on a particular piano which might have been
different from the recording piano.

text based modifications such as substitutions or searching files for
specified words. I might even get fancy and add regular expression
capabilities.

changing or removing or inserting other controllers such as volume at
the beginning of files or pedal off at the end.

add blank leaders to files that start abruptly.

listing out all midi events or just selected types to a log file in
readable english. can include header information and all the rest.

Please let me know if you have any ideas as to what might be useful.
what sorts of boring repetitive tasks are people doing to make their
files more to their liking? some of these things might be easily
automated.

Greetings disklavier,

I finally got my VellMod program to work pretty well. It has several
new features besides modifying velocity of MIDI files. You can plot
any number of histograms and display the results to compare various
files including the results of modifications.

Pedal events can be shifted to channel 3 for those DKV owners who need
this for pedals to work properly. Files can be sorted to the correct
channels for DKVs to play piano and other parts. Notes on channel 2
can be moved to channel 1 for those DKVs who need them there.

I believe that all of these features are operating simultaneously as
well as the ability to select any folder or single file. Of course, it
is impossible to know if this program works on computers other than my
own ones so it is very helpful to receive feedback, both good and bad.

The program can be found at:

Hello Spencer,

My Disklavier can only play from ONE channel. Is it possible to add a
feature to your VelMod program to combine data from Channel 2 & 1 into
Channel 1 ?

Thanks,
Sammy

Sammy,

I thought I had the same problem and asked Spencer the same question last week or so but Carol and some others set me straight. Look in your manual for "Receiving Data from a MIDI Sequencer" and "Playing Back Import Files". Both sections tell you how to use the Prg and the Prg(all) options. I set both settings to the Prg(all) option and that solved my problem. Prg worked too but read about the differences. Try them both and see.Try ## also just to see what that does. (You can probably find the discussion in the digest.)

Good Luck and let me know how you make out.

Hello Walt,

Thank you for your explanation. However, I couldn't find anything in the
manual that explains about "Prg Option".

Here is my set up and please advise if my Disklavier has the Prg Option to
make the Disklavier to play Channel 1 & 2 at the same time.

PC -> To Host Cable -> TG300 (Tone Generator) -> Midi Cable -> Disklavier
MPX100II Midi In

Good afternoon, everyone.

In a message dated 1/14/04 11:55:58 AM, Sammy writes:

I couldn't find anything in the manual that explains about "Prg Option".

Here is my set up and please advise if my Disklavier has the Prg Option to make the Disklavier to play Channel 1 & 2 at the same time.

PC -> To Host Cable -> TG300 (Tone Generator) -> Midi Cable -> Disklavier MPX100II Midi In

Since you have a Mark II instrument, your MIDI IN options are any channel from 1-16 or HP. HP receives the notes and on/off pedal data on channel 1 and incremental pedal data on channel 3.

Your cabling scheme is not correct. With your setup, the sound of your Disklavier will always be late compared to the tone generator when playing back from the computer.

Instead:

PC MIDI Interface MIDI OUT-->Disklavier MIDI IN
Disklavier MIDI OUT-->TG300 MIDI IN

When playing files from the computer, be sure to set the Disklavier's MIDI OUT option to DELAY OUT. When you do so, the Disklavier uses the MIDI OUT port as a delayed MIDI THRU port.

If you plan to play on your Disklavier and input your notes to the computer, do this connection as well:

TG3000 MIDI THRU-->PC MIDI Interface MIDI IN

When playing on the keys of the Disklavier and recording in the computer, set the Disklavier's MIDI Out feature to Keyboard Out.

At all times, keep the Disklaviers MIDI In option set to DELAY IN.

PianoBench

Greetings,

I have added several features to the program that I previously called
VelMod. It now adjust velocity as well as performing other functions
that can streamline the adaptation of MIDI files for use on the
Disklavier. Go to my home page and follow the links to download it. I
will post it to the group files area if I get enough feedback to make
that worthwhile. For now, I want to see how much it is being accessed.

Greetings,

I just realized that the MIDI modifying program written by Richard
Stibbons that is on my web site is called MidiMod so I changed the
name of mine to MidiMod2. Not very original but what else?

Hi,

I just wanted to mention my experience of using Spencer's program that he has
made available free on his website. MIDIMOD2 is available at:

http://www.spencerserolls.com/MidiMod/MidiMod2.zip

Spencer has created a program written for Windows' computers that helps better
adapt 'common' MIDI files to the Yamaha Disklavier pianos. He does not even own
a DKV; he's just helping us out! I'm only endorsing this program as an enduser
who has found it has corrected some of the problems I have found with MIDI files
that I am working with.

MIDI files not prepared specifically for the DKVs can problems such as incorrect
velocity levels, sustain pedal not working properly on some models, and in some
files, incorrect channel 'routing' causing either the piano keys not to respond
at all as intended to piano MIDI data. He has listened to many of comments such
as these that have been mentioned here on the [disklavier] list and has come up
with a solution to help in some cases. This program is not a fix for all DKV
MIDI problems. Note: some problems such as mentioned above can be sometimes
corrected by making certain that your Disklavier is properly setup and adjusted
properly by a technician. Also, the DKV control box internal software settings
need to be also set for correct MIDI 'interpretation'.

The program will allow the user to apply changes to individual MIDI files <or>
to perform a 'batch' process on folders or sub-directories containing MIDI
files. You can choose to overwrite the existing MIDI file(s) <or> you can create
new MIDI file(s) from this process.

Here is a quick rundown of some of MIDIMOD2 features:

Allows the user to create velocity 'maps' which can be applied to existing MIDI
files to change the MIDI velocity levels inside the file(s). An example would be
if a particular MIDI file causes the DKV keys to either be too loud <or> too
soft <or> even both inside the same song, adjustments to the MIDI data would
allow decreasing or increasing of the MIDI data to allow a more 'natural'
sounding performance. And the data can be also operated on and 'compressed' in
both directions (loud and soft) in one pass. These velocity 'maps' can be saved
as 'Preset Files' to your local drive and can also be sent to other DKV owners.
You can also observe a histogram graph of MIDI file velocities within a MIDI
file.

Allows the user to modify MIDI channel data within a song that may be causing
the piano keys not to respond as intended. Example, piano data may be on a
higher MIDI channel than channel 1 <or> 2. He has this set up so that you can
choose all MIDI channels below a used-defined MIDI channel, i.e., say channel 7,
to be moved to channels 1 and 2 which are normally used to control some DKV
keyboards. In some models, MIDI data needs to be only on MIDI channel 1 to
control the DKV keyboard. There is an option for this also. (For example, GM
MIDI definition has harpsichord and electric piano on these higher MIDI channels
which may be moved to the DKV piano keys on the lowest channel(s).)

In some models that support continuous pedaling MIDI data, the sustain data
needs to be on MIDI channel 3 to allow proper operation. He provides that
option.

When some of these same models operate on this continuous pedaling MIDI data and
the MIDI pedaling data only has MIDI pedal data that is only fully off or fully
on, a thumping sound may occur on some pianos. This works in much the same
process as the 'compression' of the velocity data as mentioned above. The pedal
action is limited in how far it travels. Again, some older DKV models do not
respond to continuous MIDI pedal data as other than fully-on or fully-off.

There is also a 'help' button that brings up a screen that describes the
program's operation. Granted, the user of this program needs to be a little bit
'MIDI aware' to make full use of its' capabilities.

Thanks Spencer!

Thanks Danny, for the report. The link is correct for the program but
it may change if I can think of a better name so it is best to keep
the URL for the web site handy which will not change.
