A SPECIAL THANK YOU

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

2003-11-11 by Sheldon Deluty

On behalf of myself and my wife Zoe (and I hope I speak for other members of the group), I would like the be the first on line to thank Mike Bates for his kindness and generosity in providing seats (Orchestra seats!!) to the the Solo Piano Recital (plus 3 encores!) at 8:00 pm on Monday, November 10th, 2003 of Mei-Ting Sun, the winner of the 1st International Piano-e-Competition, at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.
I was absolutely blown away by the technical mastery (wizardry?) and wide ranging repertoire of this unbelievably talented pianist. I consider myself fortunate to have been present for this early event in what will surely be his long and successful carreer as a performing artist.
It is a tribute to Yamaha that it values it customers so long after their piano purchases that it still provides so generously on their behalf.
Thank you again Mike for thinking of your devoted Disklavier customers.

USING GIEBLER UNDER XP

2003-11-11 by Sheldon Deluty

to the best of my limited understanding, giebler does not work under windows xp because the processor runs too fast
but there is a shareware program available called CPU KILLER
this program allows you to manually and controllably slow your CPU speed down to whatever speed you desire, which appears to allow Giebler and other DOS based programs and old games to run on new machines, even those with xp installed as the OS
it is trial and error as to how slow you have to make the processor run, but i can tell you that giebler works at 200 mhz (i did not try faster, yet)
when you are done, you simply close the CPU killer program and your computer ramps back up to "expressway speed" or reboot the computer
unlike the patch program kindly offered to me by jason stein, this program does not need to change the actual exe files for them to work
unfortunately, the problem remains that double density diskettes in a 1.4 HD xp floppy drive are somewhat quixotic in their performance
some diskettes can be read and some cannot, even with the slowing of the processor
i do not know if there is a program out their to make the performance of dd diskettes more predictable in modern machines
it would be nice of yamaha to provide a file reader program for their eseq formatted diskettes which can be used inside of xp or dos to read
any yamaha formatted diskettes, but i doubt that will happen any time soon
i hope this CPU killer programs helps some of the xp crowd out there who still want to use the giebler program
as giebler allows for yamaha formatting of dd diskettes outside of the disklavier, i believe it still has some utility to some users
thank you for your time

There is another solution - you can patch the Giebler .exe files so
that they are able to run on faster CPUs. The patch fixes a bug in
Turbo Pascal (which the Giebler programs were apparently written in).

Download the TPPATCH utility from
   http://dp70.dyndns.org/tmp/tppatch.zip

Extract tppatch.exe from the ZIP file. Then process each of the .exe
files in the Giebler package by doing:

   tppatch ydm.exe
   tppatch domsmf.exe

etc.

(This does modify the files, so make sure you have your original Giebler
disks available just in case anything goes wrong.)

I know the tppatch utility runs OK under DOS and Windows 95/98/ME
and I've used it successfully.

It is trickier to run under NT/2000/XP. There, you need to do:

   debug tppatch ydm.exe
   (you're now at a '-' prompt)
   g
   q
(you're now back at the normal prompt)

for each file.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU!!!!

I have tried for months to get the nice people at Giebler to help
DEBUG this fatal error when running W2K.

I'll be glad to test this FIX over the week-end when I get home
off the road.

Hi Sheldon

eseq formatted diskettes which can be used inside of xp or dos to
read
any yamaha formatted diskettes, but i doubt that will happen any time

All I can say is watch this space.......coming soon.
