Hooray! I have found the trouble.
The patched Giebler program DOMSMF.EXE doesn't like encountering a
midi file that is maked READ-ONLY. If such a file is encountered, it
crashes. The solution is to make sure all midi files are set witjout
this property.
Under XP, everything seems to now work well, and I don't need to run
the CPU Killer slow down program. The trade-off is that Giebler runs
slower under XP than in native DOS, but this is no problem.
Note that I have checked the Windows 98 Compatibility Box (in
properties) of both Giebler programs, and they now run just fine in
XP Pro.
All I have to do now is take proper note of what music is contained
in each midi file so I actually know what / who is playing, sigh.
