Giebler XP Patch Still Doesn't Work - Help!

Giebler XP Patch Still Doesn't Work - Help!

2003-12-09 by normanpetersau

Hi all - I have patched the Giebler files, and they start OK under
XP, but when I try to open a midi file for conversion to DK using
DOMSMF.EXE, the program crashes, with the familiar error message
of "Run Time error at ****.****" address and offset location,
irrespective of whether a DOS box is starrted then Geibler run, or
if it is called direct and runs in its own window.

Has anyone actually got it to work fully without crashing under XP?
Is there a magic bullet solution in the compatibility settings?

Please help.

Many thanks

Norm

go to:
download this program (cpu killer)
then run it and slow your cpu down to 200-400 mhz
then run giebler from the command prompt
giebler should run even if the program has not been "patched"
try it...
then, when you are done, close CPU killer and your system should revert back to normal
as best i understand, giebler wont work under xp because the processors run too fast
this program makes the computer run at a speed that allows xp to run giebler
hope this helps

I had similar problems with W2K and XP.

Luckilly, I found an old W98 boot disk and everything works fine
under W98. WHich is where I do all my Giebler work.

Re: Giebler XP Patch Still Doesn't Work - Help!

2003-12-09 by normanpetersau

Hi - Thanks for your suggestion, however I have already tried your
suggestion but it's no good - even with the patched software, and
slowing my 2.66 GHz P4 laptop down to < 200MHz, it still crashes.
The error is memory address space related, I believe, as it seems to
be trying to write to a location that is already in use, causing the
crash.

Incidentally, there has been much discussion about the lack of
support in XP for 720Kb floppy disks.

They are easy to format - just use the command line and type in
EXACTLY as follows between teh quote
marks: "format /t:80 /n:9 /x /v: /fs:fat a:" and then press enter -
hey presto a properly fomatted 720 Kb diskette.

Giebler has no trouble formatting either, it just runs slowly. The
crash happens (for me) at the most crucial point.

More suggestions, please!

Norm

Re: Giebler XP Patch - Fixed

2003-12-10 by normanpetersau

Hooray! I have found the trouble.

The patched Giebler program DOMSMF.EXE doesn't like encountering a
midi file that is maked READ-ONLY. If such a file is encountered, it
crashes. The solution is to make sure all midi files are set witjout
this property.

Under XP, everything seems to now work well, and I don't need to run
the CPU Killer slow down program. The trade-off is that Giebler runs
slower under XP than in native DOS, but this is no problem.

Note that I have checked the Windows 98 Compatibility Box (in
properties) of both Giebler programs, and they now run just fine in
XP Pro.

All I have to do now is take proper note of what music is contained
in each midi file so I actually know what / who is playing, sigh.

Thanks to all in the group for the helpful advice and programs.

Cheers and seasons greetings.

Hi

Why don't you format your disks in the DKV? Have you tried DKV utils?
