Downloaded files play out of order

Downloaded files play out of order

2004-07-03 by pianoalan2004

This sounds like a simplistic question but as a long time computer user I am flumoxed by
a series of midi files I downloaded last night. Kinderscenen is a 13 part work by
Schumann but its downloaded zip file plays the parts out of order. I checked the original
site and the component pieces are listed in the correct order. A zip file, encompassing all
13 pieces, is also offered which I downloaded and found the pieces were out of order
when unzipped. I tried renaming each component piece so that they all flow alphabetically
and even even though they appear on the floopy in the correct order, the Mark III DKV still
plays them out of order. The song sorting feature of the Mark III is a joke and I am
looking for an easier way. So I am stuck. Any suggestions for a seemingly simple
problem? How can I avoid this problem in the future?

When putting the .MID files onto the floppy, copy (or just drag-and-drop)
them ONE BY ONE IN THE ORDER YOU WANT. On the computer the files may still
be sorted alphabetically or by the modified date (or whichever view you
selected on the computer). But on the DKV, as long as there is no index
file (like what comes on Yamaha PianoSoft disks), I believe it goes by the
"creation date" of the files - which is actually the time you put each file
on the floppy.

This is the case on my MarkIIXG, try it out and let us know if your MarkIII
thinks the same.

ALan,

THis is a common problem.

SUggestion: Download the dkvutils.zip utility set from our file
section (Utilities folder). Place the MIDI files in a folder. Use
the MID2ESEQ utility to covert the MIDI files in that folder to ESEQ
MIDI files. (BEFORE converting, adjust the MIDI file names so that
the first 8 characters are not the same for any two files.) Then
use the Eexplorer utility to index the set and move the files around
so that they play in the order you want, and to alter the file
descriptions that display on the Disklavier controller.

P.S> perhaps one of our members knows of a utility that will allow
you to index the files without converting them to ESEQ.
