Tom,
I can explain to you why such sticking has occurred on my Mark II DC3.
Here's the sequence:
1) The MIDI file operates the una corda pedal (soft pedal, the left
pedal) and shifts the keyboard to the right.
2) A note-on occurs and presses the soft finger of the solenoid against
the underside of the key.
3) While the solenoid remains activated, the una corda pedal is
released. As the keyboard shifts to the left, the underside of the key
drags across the solenoid finger and skews the solenoid armature within
its cylinder. The solenoid is now jammed.
4) When the MIDI note-off occurs, the jammed solenoid armature cannot
drop into the cylinder and release the key. The key remains stuck.
As you have noted, a little pressure on the "stuck" key allows the
solenoid armature to drop into place. A slight tap on the una corda
pedal will accomplish the same.
The problem is with the Disklavier, not with the piano itself. I have
to agree that this sticking is most annoying as it leaves that note
disabled and undamped until you manually release it.
This sticking is not strongly consistent. It may happen again or it may
not. It may happen to other keys, but not necessarily to every key.
Since the MIDI sequence is involved, and is partly the culprit, one
(unsatisfactory) solution is to modify the MIDI file--change the timing
of, or eliminate, the una corda commands.
My RPT was not enthused about working on this problem. I'm sure you
could find someone who, for X dollars an hour, might swap out armatures
for that one note. The sticking is so sporadic that you might later be
calling for help again when a different song causes a different key to
stick. Yamaha knows about this problem--I, for one, have told them. I
expect if you approach them about it, they will respond as though this
were the first they ever heard of it.
In my case, I tolerated the problem for several years. Something seems
to have broken-in and the problem went away sometime during my seven
year's ownership.
