Original Artist Music Software

Original Artist Music Software

2005-07-15 by pangaeapilot

I'm a newbie and was wondering if anyone else is as frustrated as I
am at the lack of Original Artist Music Software for the
Disklaviers. Could someone explain what the problem is and why this
cannot be rectified? Why can't any Artists make money off of
Disklavier Software just as they would if they sold a record?

I am quite disappointed after purchasing my Disklavier that artists
like Billy Joel, Elton John, etc. have PianoSoft titles out but
performed by some other Pianist who naturally does not have ANY of
their style and/or sound. This seems true of the majority of music
available for purchase.

Does anyone know if it's possible to convert/format Commercial Music
CD's to be able to play the actual piano parts on the Disklavier?

I understand there are PianoSoft and PianoSmart CD's available but
this is also either very limited or using another "play along"
pianist's performance with the actual commercial performance and not
the real original artist.

The closest I have gotten so far to hearing pure artistry from my
Disklavier has been from the "Gershwin plays Gershwin" Software that
was actual Piano Rolls performed by him and converted to Disklavier
Technology. There must be others???

Conversion of piano rolls to MIDI files, which can be played on the
Disklavier, is being undertaken by several people in a loosely
organized cooperative effort.
I have a website with approximately 1000 piano rolls scanned so far,
and more being added as I obtain more rolls to scan.
There are many excellent performances by some of the top piano roll
artists of that era ( Charley Straight, Zez Confrey, Roy Bargy,
Jimmy Blythe, J. Russel Robinson, etc.) available for free download.

My site is at:

   http://www.trachtman.org/rollscans/

Due to U.S. copyright restrictions, only songs from 1922 and earlier
are available for public download from my site.

My piano roll MIDI site is similar to Terry Smythe's site at:
   http://members.shaw.ca/smythe/rebirth.htm
which also has a few thousand piano rolls converted to MIDI files.

I hope this is helpful.

Regards,
Warren Trachtman

I share your wish that more commercial artists would record for Disklavier, but there are hours of recordings available if you know where to look.
1. Do you have a copy of Yamaha's complete catalog? You might order a copy from them or get one from your dealer. I've found it much easier to find what they do have in a catalog rather than on the web.
2. The Pianodisk library http://www.pianodisc.com/emusic/index1.asp is another source of some good original artist recordings. There's a lot of archived communication in the Yahoo Disklavier forum about their compatibility with Disklaviers, but generally they seem to work.
3. Wayne Stahnke has a library of original artists (with an accent on classical recordings) available through http://www.pianodisc.com/emusic/index1.asp, including all the Rachmaninoff recordings beautifully restored.
And of course there's the entire body of piano roll conversions mentioned in Warren Trachtman's earlier response.

Hi,
I am not exactly a newboy, but I am astonished that
someone hasn't recorded the great repertoire for the
instrument in complete volumes. Eg Where can I find
the Well Tempered Clavier in its entirety, or the
Chopin Waltzes, Nocturnes, Polonaises, indeed all of
the great works of this composer in complete volumes.
I am gladly willing to pay for these.
Can anyone help me please????

For the JSB Well Tempered Clavier, I heartily recommend

Das Wohltemperierte Klavier J. S. BACH performed by Mehmet Okonsar
which you can find on Amazon.

This complete version comes in a set of 3 CD's. CD #3 contains, among other files, the MIDI files and they play beautifully on a Disklavier.

Although it doesn't contain either complete volumes (such as what you
have listed) nor corrected (i.e. perfect) performances, the
International Piano-e-Competition (www.piano-e-competition.com) web
site does include an enormous library of high quality classical
recordings from both the 2002 and 2004 performances. The recordings
were made on a Disklavier Pro. In the case of certain pieces, you can
actually find multiple recordings of the same work.

It is a little hard to find the recordings by navigating from the
home page. Better places to start are:

2002
http://www.piano-e-competition.com/finalists.htm

2004
http://www.piano-e-competition.com/2004Contestants.htm

I share your concern for original artist material. I wonder if the artists themselves know what a lasting legacy such recordings could be for them. I have found other reproducing piano rolls with original artist recordings and they are simply wonderful! Scott Joplin, Josef Hofmann, Pederewski, Adam Caroll, Sergie Rachmaninoff, Arthur Rubinstein, and others.

I too would love to have some of our contemporary performers record for Disklavier. Perhaps a music publisher could make this happen but I fear there might not be enough money in the venture to make it worth their while. In comparison to the tens of millions of potential buyers for conventional CD's, Disklavier owners probably number in the thousands.

Perhaps we, as Disklavier owners, could approach a performer (or their agent) and inquire about the possibilities?

Regards,

Mike

Hi,

This is interesting. I am sure I read somewhere that Elton John
either owns or at least uses a disclavier during some of his
performances so it may be that the files already exist and only need
marketing.

Hi I'm Robert,

Wayne Stahnke Has wonderful software in the E-seq
format that plays on your disklavier. He has all of
Rachmanivaoff"s Ampeco rolls trasfered and are
wonderful. The software is called Live Performence and
I sell them or you can look at the whole library at
www.computerklavier.com and purchase form them.

Best wishes,

Robert Turner
