MIDI file CD's. Can They be played on Disklavier?

MIDI file CD's. Can They be played on Disklavier?

2005-11-14 by rclerk@aol.com

Recently I decided to move a number of MIDI files from my desktop computer by burning them to a CD. Since a good number of them contained piano as primary instrument, I stuck the CD into my Mark III Disklavier but it doesn't seem to recognize anything. I thought it should read CD's as well as floppys regarding MIDI files. The files will play fine using the CD with my laptop hooked to the Disklavier but I would like to be able to just stick the CD into the piano and select songs. Any suggestions?

Robert, unfortunately the Disklavier cannot directly read data files
from a CD. To make your own CD, you have to convert the MIDI files into
special WAVE audio files containing a control track and burn those to an
*audio* CD. I wrote a utility to do that conversion:

   http://dp70.dyndns.org/mid2pianocd/

This program batch-converts MIDI files to Disklavier format WAV files.
You then use your favorite CD-burning software to make the CD.

Because storing MIDI modulated as audio is much less efficient than
storing MIDI as data, you will be limited to the playing time of the CD
(74-80 minutes).

Unfortunately, this can not be done. I personally never understood why
Yamaha didn't provide a firmware upgrade to allow this. It really
could not be that difficult.... SJ

Other options for floppy disks

2005-11-16 by Rod Meiners

Has anyone tried to use a flashpath floppy that takes smartmedia memory
cards into a floppy disk on a disklavier floppy drive? With this floppy
disk, you can have a 128mb memory card available through a floppy disk. The
main problem that I could see with this on the disklavier would be the need
to group files in folders. (not sure if this is possible) 128mb of midi
files all at the same level would be tedious to navigate.

The link below describes the disk and how it is 3x faster than a normal
floppy disk.

RE: [disklavier] Other options for floppy disks

2005-11-16 by Rod Meiners

Replying to my own question, after looking at this a bit more, it appears
that this has its own drivers. It actually reads a portion from the floppy
disk, but then needs drivers to interpret and further read from the memory
card.
It would be nice if there were other media options for the disklavier. My
floppies seem slow and sometimes are fragile with young kids that handle
them.

I love the disklavier and the ability to play and build great music.

For the newbies, the world of good midi, and sharing the files opens up the
world of music to you. Yamaha Musicsoft is good, and I have many, but from

Then there is the great music offered from old piano rolls that have been
converted to midi and shared.

My wife is in a choir at church and the director sends midis for the choir

I and perhaps others would be interested to know the best source for live (not "sequenced") MIDI performances in your experience. In my limited experience, I find 8 out of 10 MIDI files disappointing and lack the "human" quality of the best music played on the Disklavier. This is not meant as a criticism of MIDI sequences but only my own personal listening preference on the Disklavier.

My wife is in a choir at church and the director sends midis for the choir to practice with. I file them and play them on the piano.

I would be pleased to share "offline" further discussion with other collectors.

I am sending along a Christmas file ready to go.

Replying to my own question, after looking at this a bit more, it appears
that this has its own drivers. It actually reads a portion from the floppy
disk, but then needs drivers to interpret and further read from the memory
card.
It would be nice if there were other media options for the disklavier. My
floppies seem slow and sometimes are fragile with young kids that handle
them.

You made me love you

2005-11-19 by Dan O'Connor

Dear All:

I am a collector of the song "You made me love". It is the song that my
wife and I have made ours since our wedding. I have scoured the internet
and some commercial disks have maybe 15 variations, some good and some
great...but I am always on the lookout for the next great rendition.

Should any of you have captured or played a good to great version I would be
beholding to you to send it along to me.

Thanks and should any of be seeking a song or theme let me know and I will
reciprocate.

Cheers

Dan

I and perhaps others would be interested to know the best source for live
(not "sequenced") MIDI performances in your experience. In my limited
experience, I find 8 out of 10 MIDI files disappointing and lack the "human"
quality of the best music played on the Disklavier. This is not meant as a
criticism of MIDI sequences but only my own personal listening preference on
the Disklavier.

I have been collecting midi files on the net for the last 4 years. I
convert them to play properly with the Disklavier and then add them to my
collection which covers all of my music interests. I have contributed to
the web site we share but would be most pleased to find fellow collectors
whom might wish to find particular music and swap.

I love the disklavier and the ability to play and build great music.

For the newbies, the world of good midi, and sharing the files opens up the
world of music to you. Yamaha Musicsoft is good, and I have many, but from
time to time you find a truly great midi files. I am at 1285 and counting.
Then there is the great music offered from old piano rolls that have been
converted to midi and shared.

My wife is in a choir at church and the director sends midis for the choir
to practice with. I file them and play them on the piano.

I would be pleased to share "offline" further discussion with other
collectors.
