usb to serial converter

usb to serial converter

2006-02-10 by jason_jkim

Hi All

I have the following configuration.

computer(com2) -> ccibm cable -> TO HOST port on TG100 -> TG100(MIDI
out) -> MX80(MIDI in) or DKC5R controller -> MX80. And it plays fine.
However, I used old computer that has serial port. I was wondering or
if anybody tried USB to serial converter. Ultimately I want to use
laptop or computer with USB port with the following setting. BTW, the
TG100 only say MAC, MIDI, PC1 and PC2.

So the configuration will be laptop -> USB to Serial converter -> CCIBM
cable -> TO HOST port on TG100. Is this going to work?

Any feedback is helpful and appreciated. Thank you.

Jason

Re: [disklavier] usb to serial converter

Good afternoon, everyone.

There is one very reliable solution: the Yamaha UX96 MIDI interface.
This interface connects to USB on either a Mac or Windows computer.
It has MIDI In and Out ports as well as a To Host serial port. I have
not used this with the To Host serial port on a Disklavier in some
time. I think that you need to set the To Host port to Mac when using
a Mac or to PC2 when using a Windows computer.

The UX96 is a somewhat expensive solution since USB-to-Serial
converters cost much less. I think that the UX96 is in the $80-100
range. However, I am not sure whether such converters will work
because they need a driver that is compatible with the flow of MIDI
data. On a Windows computer, I think that the Yamaha CBX driver
communicates with the serial port for this purpose. I don't think
that you can tell this driver to communicate with a USB port that has
a converter connected to it.

Alternatively, a USB MIDI interface, like the Yamaha UX16 works just
fine. It has USB at the computer end and MIDI In and Out plugs at the
other.
