Mark IV and Streaming Radio with Macintosh

2007-06-07 by jheitzeb1

I tried out the ethernet cable from my Mac Portable to Disklavier Mark IV directly and set
my Macintosh to "share internet" under system preferences "sharing". I was able to
successfully play my disklavier from the complementary streaming piano radio station. It
has been going all afternoon. It is great!

I will have to consider the buffalo hardware to do this wirelessly as I don't won't to dedicate
this portable Mac strictly to my Disklavier at this time (however, it is a good excuse to buy
another Mac ... ). I might even consider the subscription service it is THAT GOOD.

Gene, you info very interesting as well. But again, a dedicated device under or near the piano
is needed and I would prefer a wireless solution.

$99 http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ for wireless between Mac (if a new
Mac with built-in Airport, if not, buy a card from Apple) and Mark IV (plug
RJ45, or USB, from piano to Airport Express, which is plugged into
electrical wall socket). It is 802.11g with a soon-to-be-released 802.11n.

George,

What will waiting for the 802.11n version give me? faster transmission of data?

This sounds like a good solution and I have two $50 gift certificates for Apple Store
presently and would prefer to buy Apple related equipment anyway. At least it could be
used for transmitting music and last time I considered the purchase of the airport express,
it was backordered and I just did not purchase one at the time.

Since I connected via the PCR or Pocket Controller that comes with the Disklavier Mark IV and
it does NOT display the URL on that device.

G was about 5x faster transmission of data than B; and N is about 5x faster
than G (in addition to providing extended range. Of course, your base unit
(Airport installed in, or attached to Mac) must be matched to get the speeds
(all versions are backward compatible).

Attached is pdf document showing how I installed a wireless access point to my Mark IV. I already had a wireless network in my home so this was all that was necessary. It's tucked up under the piano and can't be seen.

Congratulations Joan!

If this worked wired, then it should work wirelessly

From the network point of view:

You will need to convert the Ethernet from wired to wireless.

This conversion is done by many devices in the market

I am not familiar with the Buffalo hardware, but it seems this is his job; in this case it is not the only choice.

I do not have a mark IV to test myself, but I understand that the wireless connection on the DKV is dedicated to a specific device and cannot be used for the standard Ethernet, so you need the extra wire (RJ45) connection for this task.

Since you are using you PC and have access to the internet I assume you already have the wireless access point and all other devices needed

Any good IT pro can help you on this (maybe yourself is the one) since is computer, not piano related.

The pdf document did not come over as an attachment.

Am interested in this information. I just subscribed to the Disklavier Radio and am VERY
pleased with it. The Jazz channel is outstanding. I am using a Macintosh portable hooked
via ethernet cable to my Mark IV while putting the Mac in "share internet" mode via
ethernet. I would like to do this wirelessly. I will probably buy the airport express
hardware as suggested in this thread, but am waiting for the newer revision.

thanks,
Joan

Re: [disklavier] Re: Mark IV and Streaming Radio with Macintosh

2007-07-06 by Larry Michel

Sorry about the late reply. I think this was subsequently covered, but the key is that this is an "access point". ; It picks up the wireless signal from the router and it has an ethernet port to connect via a cable to the disklavier. Very simple. Mine happens to be made by linksys. The buffalo system is really for those that don't have routers.
