Types of Disklaviers & Disks

Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-13 by alfredcss

Hi, I'm new here. Would like to start with some basic questions.
Tried going through the site...see most of the issues are pretty
advanced, so would really appreciate your patience to help me with
some basic stuff.

1. Type of Disklavier

My understanding:
i. 1st Gen = Pianosoft Solo disks only, 3.5" Floppy DD only.
ii. 2nd Gen = Mark II XG = Pianosoft Plus disks, 3.5" Floppy HD
disks.
iii. 3rd Gen - Mark III = CD playable.

Am I right? Or far off?

2. See quite a few people have added the CD Player DCD1 to the older
disklaviers.

i. What's the cost of the DCD1?
ii. Does it make Pianosoft Plus/Smart CDs to be playable on older
disklaviers, or make 1st Gen Disklavier become XG?

3. Files sharing.

Those files available for download...how do you play them on the
disklavier? Copy to a 3.5" floppy DD or HD? Someone mentioned
disklavier can be connected to a computer to play the MIDI
files...did I get understand it right?

4. I should be ordering a used disklavier 121 or 131cm height within
a week, imported from Japan. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Looks right to me so far. See the MIDI Tools part of group member Carol's
website:

Yes, don't know the cost. It has two audios (direct from the CD and
midi out). It does
not add the XG tone generator. I'm not sure how much stuff is out
there with XG stuff
encoded. The CD's used by the DCD1 and the MarkIII are essentially
standard stereo
audio. The pianosoft cd's that play the piano encode midi as an audio
track on the right
channel. The left channel provides the recorded accompaniment.

You can burn them to the floppies if you have a convertable drive.
Yes, you can just
use your favorite MIDI player to connect directly to the piano (with
your computer's
midi interface). I use the Van Basco Karoke player (see Carols site)
and then you
can download hundreds of piano rolls and other midi files.

After it has settled for a couple of weeks have a disklavier savvy tech
come in and take
a look at it.

Re: [disklavier] Types of Disklaviers & Disks

My concern is that you do not buy a gray market
Disklavier because you will NOT be able to get parts in
the U.S.A. should you have a problem. Whatever you
buy, write down the serial number and call Yamaha to
make sure the instrument was made for sale in the
U.S.A. market. Not to engage in shameless self
promotion, but there is all kinds of information about
buying used and new Disklaviers on my website:
www.carolrpt.com as well as a description of what a
gray market units are.

Basically, the older the model you buy, the more hoops
you will need to jump through to do many things that
the later models do. Although a DCD1 or a DSR1 can be
purchased to ($1295 each) to upgrade most units to a
MarkIIXG capability, it also takes a new memory board
($300) on many models to upgrade to NEAR the capability
of a MarkIII. Full featured MarkIII units have
transposable audio that allow you to play Yamaha
pianosmart disks along with older CDs that were not
recorded at the standard internation pitch of A440 hz.
Even after adding the DCD1, DSR1 and a new memory board
to older models, you are still limited to playing those
piano smart disks that match prerecorded CDs that were
originally recorded at A440 hz.

Used Disklaviers, like used cars can be a good value.
Since Volkswagons never perform like Mercedes, you need
to make sure the selection fits your wants.

Re: [disklavier] Types of Disklaviers & Disks

Good morning, everyone.

I would like to address these questions, in particular #4.

On Jun 13, 2007, at 6:34 AM, alfredcss wrote:

Hi, I'm new here. Would like to start with some basic questions.
Tried going through the site...see most of the issues are pretty
advanced, so would really appreciate your patience to help me with
some basic stuff.

1. Type of Disklavier

My understanding:
i. 1st Gen = Pianosoft Solo disks only, 3.5" Floppy DD only.

With the addition of a tone generator, these instruments can play PianoSoft Plus disks. With the addition of a DSR1, they can play HD disks and the DSR1 includes the tone generator. With a DCD1, they can play PianoSoft Plus Audio and many Smart PianoSoft.

ii. 2nd Gen = Mark II XG = Pianosoft Plus disks, 3.5" Floppy HD
disks.

With a DCD1, they can play PianoSoft Plus Audio and many Smart PianoSoft.

iii. 3rd Gen - Mark III = CD playable.

Am I right? Or far off?

See answers abov.

2. See quite a few people have added the CD Player DCD1 to the older
disklaviers.

i. What's the cost of the DCD1?

The suggested list price is $1,295, which is also the suggested list price of the DSR1.

ii. Does it make Pianosoft Plus/Smart CDs to be playable on older
disklaviers, or make 1st Gen Disklavier become XG?

Yes with one exception regarding Smart PianoSoft recordings: There are some such recordings that require a tuning message in the MIDI file that is used to adjust the pitch of the audio recording in order to keep it in tune with the piano. The DCD1 does not respond to that tuning message. For this reason, certain Smart PianoSoft recordings are not recommended for DCD1.

3. Files sharing.

Those files available for download...how do you play them on the
disklavier? Copy to a 3.5" floppy DD or HD?

Yes. However, DIsklaviers prior to the Mark II require the files to be converted to E-SEQ, unless they are played from a DSR1 or computer.

Someone mentioned
disklavier can be connected to a computer to play the MIDI
files...did I get understand it right?

This is true for all models.

4. I should be ordering a used disklavier 121 or 131cm height within
a week, imported from Japan. Any advice?

If you are purchasing your Disklavier from an authorized Yamaha dealer in North America, then you should be fine. If you are purchasing an imported Disklavier from someone else, you are probably importing a so-called "gray market" instrument whose wood was not dried properly for conditions in North America. Yamaha Corporation of America and Yamaha Canada will not provide support for those instruments.

Thanks to all who advised with invaluable information.

I got in a day, what I was searching for weeks!!! Haha.

Thanks again...I probably need another few weeks to digest all these
information :)

BTW, I'm located in Singapore...probably a 'speck' in terms of
market size vs America. That's why we don't have much information &
support over here...even the local Yamaha showrooms carry a grand
total of about 10 to 20 Pianosoft disks combined!!! :( I just
visited their showrooms...no sign of Mark IV yet :(

Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

Hi All,

Just thought I should at least find out.

Local authorised Yamaha dealer only carries the DU1A (talking abour
Uprights only) at RRP of US$11.5k, bargainable to US$9k for the
display set.

Read in the Yamaha Corporation of America website that there are 2
Uprights available, DU1A and MX116. Would really appreciate it if
you can advise the RRP as well as the 'market obtainable price' for
these 2 models.

Is there any 'remote' possibility of exporting one of these models
to Asia? I've read that gray models are exported from Asia to
America. What if its the other way round?

BTW, I've further gone thru' tonnes of information on this site &
they were very informative & useful.

Thanks again :)

Sometimes it is difficult for dealers to carry an extensive number of
Pianosoft.

You can select from thousands of downloadable and shippable titles on our
site www.yamahamusicsoft.com <http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/> .

We also ship via courier to Singapore - you'll have your Pianosoft 2-3 days
after ordering.

Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-19 by alfredcss

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the advice.

1. I've looked at the site mentioned, but can't find the applicable
shipping charges. Would appreciate it if you can enlighten.

2. Also, what is typically the payment mode?

3. I've seen this old but nice Pianosoft Solo disk, but can't find
it on your website. It's titled: "A Time For Us", some of the pieces
include: a. Where Do I Begin - Francis Lai, b. We May Never Love
Like This Again. Do you have this?

Hi Carol,

1. Saw in one of your replies sometime in 2002:

"Try setting the display to English.

a. Turn the unit on pressing the L and R buttons together.
b. Press Yes once to select the CTRL SHEET
c. Then press R to set it to English
(L would set it to Japanese)

On this model, the L and R buttons are the last two buttons on the
top row on the right. Who knows if this will work. I am just
guessing that a model made for Japan will come up in English."

Saw a relatively "new" (11 years old) used disklavier model HQ100SX
with silent feature. LCD display is combination of English &
Japanese. Any idea if I can use the above procedure to 'switch' the
display to English?

2. Going by the literature, this model HQ100SX uses 2DD floppy disks
only, but I saw 2HD disks being played, with one of the bottom
square holes taped up. But when I used my own 2HD disk (taped up),
with MIDI files downloaded from this site, it says "Unformatted
Disk", any idea why?

3. Also, when the disks are ejected, they get 'stuck' and you have
to use your finger to 'fish' them out. Any particular reason /
remedy?

4. Would this model HQ100SX be a Gen 1 or Mark II Disklavier?

5. Does having a silent unit means there's a Tone Generator?

6. What kind of Pianosoft disks can it play? Solo, Plus,...?

Sorry I'm asking all these, when the sales person should be helping
to answer them. Like I mentioned previously, local disklavier
market/owners are relatively 'few', so the support is lacking for
both authorised & 'Gray' market.

Thanks again :)

Regards.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-19 by Carol Beigel

This reply will probably be a downer! There is
absolutely no way any advice I can give you would be
reliable for a used Disklavier that you would find in
Singapore. I understand that 1.44 HD floppy disks are
no longer going to be made. The DD floppy disks that
the original Disklaviers used have a different amount
of magnetic material on them and use different size
heads to read them. That could be a possibility of why
HD disks with the extra hole taped over don't often
work.

Perhaps some good advice directly from Japan would be
more helpful to you.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-19 by Mark

I have had no problem using 1.44 2HD disks in my 1997 Disklavier. The
important issue is properly formatting them. Sometimes the format
command has not formatted down to 720k like I selected. When this
happens, I just do a reformat. I find it is important to wait until the
floppy drive light goes out. The format application on screen will
finish long before the light goes out. I think it may be completed at
the software level but needs to finish at the hardware level. The higher
density of magnetic particles is accommodated in the formating process.
If anyone needs 1.44 2HD disks, I have close to 200 of them.
If I ever find a buyer for my MX100XG II, I will not have any further
need for the floppies.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-19 by Ron Natalie

I have had poor luck with my machine and formatting disks for my Mark III.

I just took the very simple solution: Format them in the Disklavier (it
will
do that) and then stick them in the computer to copy stuff to them.

Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

Wouldn't it be nice if you could replace that old floppy drive with a
zip drive or similar? I have a MX100II and hate to think I'll be
searching flea markets someday looking for floppies. I use the laptop
midi, but its just more fun to pop in a disk and let it play.

You can find our shipping charges here:

http://yamahamusicsoft.com/index.php?action=ShippingRates

Payment on our site is by credit card.

Regarding the title you are looking for, could it be this one?

Regards.

Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-21 by alfredcss

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the info.

1. Freight - I assume courier is the one you mentioned which takes 2-
3 days. How about normal mail - how long does it take usually?

2. The title I'm looking for has a "Jasper" label on it but I can
see its an original Pianosoft Solo. It's different from the one you
indicated. Thanks anyway.

Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-21 by alfredcss

Sorry for the delayed response, I was having some problems as my
postings didn't show up the past few days. Just checked with Todd
who advised to check my user profile. I did, profile seems ok, but I
reset it anyway...& seems like it works ok now.

Hi Mark,

You're ok with 2HD disks probably because yours is a Mark II.

Hi Carol,

No problem, I have to thank you for warning me what I'm getting into
if I get an aged Disklavier.

Advice from Japan...dunno where to get them?

Regards.

Re: RE: [disklavier] Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-29 by jcss@pacific.net.sg

Hi Troy,

I've just place an order(Order Number:1062028).

Shipping mode selected was DHL Courier for US$35.

Any idea if I'll receive the items in 2-3 days like you mentioned? Does that mean I'll receive the items on Monday? Or later because should be 2-3 working days?

Thanks & Regards.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-29 by Mark

I am asking all DUG participants to be specific in their subject line.

If you could specify Mark IV or Mark III in the subject line, those of
us who have no interest in Mark III and Mark IV issues can filter out
these e-mails. It appears that there is nothing that pertains to Mark
III and Mark IV Disklaviers that is relevant to older models. The volume
of Mark III and Mark IV mail could be why so many dropped off the list.

In response, those of us with Mark II issues could also put Mark II in
the subject line so those of you with Mark III and Mark IV models can
filter out our messages.

Mark II & earlier: Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-07-06 by alfredcss

Hi All,

Thanks for all your advice...I've bought a used 11-year-old
disklavier HQ100SX with MU50 & enjoying it at the moment while
figuring things out.

Hi Carol,

Guess what...I got a very courteous response from Japan :) ...& this
is what I've gathered so far about the HQ100SX silent:

1. It is a 2nd Generation Mark II
2. Plays only 2DD pre-recorded floppies
3. Plays Yamaha Pianosoft Solo & Plus
4. It can nevertheless use 2HD disks for recording purposes only

Understand it's a lot of hassle to go through to upgrade it to near
Mark III capabilities...so I won't do that.

I'll next explore connecting a PC/notebook to the Disklavier to play
MIDI files. To start with, I believe I should get the Yamaha cable
UX-16 right? Yes, I'll go through your website again for tips. Will
also try to source for 2DD disks.

Thanks again.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
