My concern is that you do not buy a gray market Disklavier because you will NOT be able to get parts in the U.S.A. should you have a problem. Whatever you buy, write down the serial number and call Yamaha to make sure the instrument was made for sale in the U.S.A. market. Not to engage in shameless self promotion, but there is all kinds of information about buying used and new Disklaviers on my website: www.carolrpt.com as well as a description of what a gray market units are. Basically, the older the model you buy, the more hoops you will need to jump through to do many things that the later models do. Although a DCD1 or a DSR1 can be purchased to ($1295 each) to upgrade most units to a MarkIIXG capability, it also takes a new memory board ($300) on many models to upgrade to NEAR the capability of a MarkIII. Full featured MarkIII units have transposable audio that allow you to play Yamaha pianosmart disks along with older CDs that were not recorded at the standard internation pitch of A440 hz. Even after adding the DCD1, DSR1 and a new memory board to older models, you are still limited to playing those piano smart disks that match prerecorded CDs that were originally recorded at A440 hz. Used Disklaviers, like used cars can be a good value. Since Volkswagons never perform like Mercedes, you need to make sure the selection fits your wants.
