Re: [disklavier] Types of Disklaviers & Disks

2007-06-13 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

I would like to address these questions, in particular #4.

Hi, I'm new here. Would like to start with some basic questions.
Tried going through the site...see most of the issues are pretty
advanced, so would really appreciate your patience to help me with
some basic stuff.

1. Type of Disklavier

My understanding:
i. 1st Gen = Pianosoft Solo disks only, 3.5" Floppy DD only.

With the addition of a tone generator, these instruments can play PianoSoft Plus disks. With the addition of a DSR1, they can play HD disks and the DSR1 includes the tone generator. With a DCD1, they can play PianoSoft Plus Audio and many Smart PianoSoft.

ii. 2nd Gen = Mark II XG = Pianosoft Plus disks, 3.5" Floppy HD
disks.

With a DCD1, they can play PianoSoft Plus Audio and many Smart PianoSoft.

iii. 3rd Gen - Mark III = CD playable.

Am I right? Or far off?

See answers abov.

2. See quite a few people have added the CD Player DCD1 to the older
disklaviers.

i. What's the cost of the DCD1?

The suggested list price is $1,295, which is also the suggested list price of the DSR1.

ii. Does it make Pianosoft Plus/Smart CDs to be playable on older
disklaviers, or make 1st Gen Disklavier become XG?

Yes with one exception regarding Smart PianoSoft recordings: There are some such recordings that require a tuning message in the MIDI file that is used to adjust the pitch of the audio recording in order to keep it in tune with the piano. The DCD1 does not respond to that tuning message. For this reason, certain Smart PianoSoft recordings are not recommended for DCD1.

3. Files sharing.

Those files available for download...how do you play them on the
disklavier? Copy to a 3.5" floppy DD or HD?

Yes. However, DIsklaviers prior to the Mark II require the files to be converted to E-SEQ, unless they are played from a DSR1 or computer.

Someone mentioned
disklavier can be connected to a computer to play the MIDI
files...did I get understand it right?

This is true for all models.

4. I should be ordering a used disklavier 121 or 131cm height within
a week, imported from Japan. Any advice?

If you are purchasing your Disklavier from an authorized Yamaha dealer in North America, then you should be fine. If you are purchasing an imported Disklavier from someone else, you are probably importing a so-called "gray market" instrument whose wood was not dried properly for conditions in North America. Yamaha Corporation of America and Yamaha Canada will not provide support for those instruments.
