Talk to Nick Caffacus at Jordan Kitt's music. He manages the Midlothian Store location (across from whitlow chevrolet). Not exactly Glen Allen, but close enough that he may know someone in your area. He used to work near me at Williamsburg's Piano & Organ Outlet and sold many Yamahas. He doesn't sell any Yamahas where he is now, but he and I are pals and I'm sure if you mention my name he will try to sincerely help you out. I know the guy I use locally here in Williamsburg is good, but Glen Allen is a bit far for him to go. However, let me know if you'd like to try calling him yourself, I'll dig up his number. It's just that I'm sure there's gotta be someone in your area. Good luck!

I probably have a model one generation ahead of yours(a mark II).
I bought a separate mu50 tone generator with the piano(1995). I use the
mu50 to play the non piano instrments in the midi files through my
stereo amplifier. It can probably used for a lot more than just what I
am using it for.

The next model after my mark II came with the mu50 tone generator built
into the piano and it was called MarkIIXG??(it could also play HD floppy
disks instead of just the DD floppy disks which hold only 720K - the HD
holds 1440K).

Owners of the MarkII had the option of upgrading their system to the XG
model by buying a DSR1(I did not bother because it is of little use to
me since I already have the mu50 and the ability to play HD disks is not
much of an advantage - because it is possible to play midi files
directly from the hard drive of your laptop computer.)

The mu50 has been succeded by other models which have 64 note polyphony
which is an advantage. That reminds me the one big advantage of the Mark
IIXG models was their ability to play piano parts even if they were not
on tracks 1 and 2. (When I play the midi files on my mark II I have to
change the midi files to make sure that the piano parts are on tarck 1
and 2.)

Hope this helps.

Ed,

If I were interested in playing with synthesizers, I believe I would head for
some music stores that carry synth keyboard brands such as Yamaha, Roland, Korg,
etc. and familiarize myself with their offerings. (The best prices can be found
around the country at discount houses such as Grandma's Music).

The money you would spend on the upgrades you mentioned would go a long way
toward a keyboard/synthesizer. Using the MX100A as a synth keyboard presents
you with a problem: How are you going to listen to a solo synth voice without
also hearing the piano playing?

The ultimate setup would be a PC running a program such as Cakewalk (which would
serve as a recording/reproducing sequencer and MIDI editor), an independent
keyboard synth, and a sound system. If you want to write ensemble tracks that
would play via MIDI on the MX100A (I'm assuming your MX100A has a MIDI
interface), you may do so, but there is another little problem you must solve:
Disklaviers, to play well, are normally set to the 500 millisecond delay mode.
To play in sync, either the DKV delay must be set to zero through the front
panel adjustment of the DKV control unit, or your synth tracks must be shifted
by one half second.

Good luck!

Edmond,
The module I purchased in 1991 for my MX100A was a DOM-30, it worked
with both Clavinova pianos and Discklavier pianos. DOM stnads for "disk
orchestra module". This module plays and records only DD disks. I believe
it can only record 11 tracks (piano on 1 & 2, 8 additional voices and 1
rhythm track). I recently upgraded to a DSR-1. If you are interested in
adding a module to your piano you but don't want to spend $800 to $1300 you
might consider making me an offer on my old DOM-30. I still have the users
manual and can include the MIDI cables that connect to the piano. The DOM-30
connects to an external audio system by way of RCA plugs.
