Soft pedal

2000-12-27 by suepik@juno.com

I have an MX1 Mark IIXG, one year old. Because the volume on all of the
music we have - be it PianoDisks or downloaded - is so loud, we turn it
down to its lowest setting which places the soft pedal in its lowest
position. We play the piano in this mode for 2-3 hours/day continuously
on average. Can this cause any damage to the piano? I would appreciate
some input from all of you knowledgeable folks !

Mark,

Thank you so much for your response. The last thing I wanted to do was
anything harmful to this beautiful instrument. We love it so much !!! My
81 year old mother is the one who makes us play it so much - we bought
Duo Art piano roll emulations and she as well as the rest of us have
really been enjoying a lot of Gershwin and company !! You've put my mind
at ease.

Check out veloset, which is part of the DKVUTIL package in the file vault. It will allow you to easily adjust the volume level of your material, and reduce the need for such extreme measures.

On a MX1IIXG (your model), when the volume knob is at 7 or below, the soft pedal goes into a "locked" position and power is cut to the solenoid. It will remain in this "locked" position until the volume is increased to 6 or above.
The bottom line is that leaving your piano in "soft" mode doesn't hurt it.

The bottom line is that there is no damage being done to the piano if the
