Successful Airport Express with Mark IV Disklavier

Successful Airport Express with Mark IV Disklavier

2007-08-25 by jheitzeb1

I did it. Feel like a "high tech lady" this morning. I got my Mark IV Disklavier to work with
my new Airport Extreme Base Station hooked to my old Mac G4. My piano is playing the
"Disklavier Radio" thru the WIFI connection using an Airport Express with ethernet cable
hooked directly to the Mark IV.

The good news all the Mac computers (3) can also still access the internet, use the printers
and even my iPhones are still connecting to the internet via WIFI. It is always a big deal
around here when trying something technical to make sure it doesn't screw up existing WIFI
connections to internet and email and other devices.

If you want to know how I accomplished this, I will be glad to help.

Re: Successful Airport Express with Mark IV Disklavier

Here is the Step by Step Instructions

How I got it to work:
Objective:
Setup an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station as WIFI Airport Network (WDS Main Base
Station). (Note: I have Mac PowerPC G4's or similar Macs running Mac OS X 10.4.10 and
Airport Utility Software V5.2.1)

Setup an Apple Airport Express device hooked to Mark IV Disklavier via ethernet
connection and plugged into wall socket near Disklavier.

Software: Airport Utility Software V5.2.1 Mac OS X 10.4.10

STEP 1:
If your Airport Extreme Base Station is already hooked to your computer go to Step 2.

Hook Airport Extreme Base Station to cable modem via ethernet cable and plug into wall
socket.

Run Airport Utility software.
The Airport Extreme should appear on the right hand side of the window.
Select "continue" button and go thru the assist options to set it up
or select the "manual setup" button.
Note: If device icon does not show up, run "Rescan" or you may have to select it
under your Airport icon in menu bar for it to be recognized.

The first screen that appears has four tabs across the top: Summary, Base Station,
Wireless, Access Control.

Review info in Summary Tab: Base Station Name, Base Station Status, Version, Serial
Number, Airport ID, Ethernet ID and Wireless Mode, Network Name, Wireless Security,
Channel, Wireless Clients, connect using, and IP Address

PLEASE take note of the Airport ID for this Main Base Station as it will be needed when
setting up the Airport Express device. This Airport ID can also be found on the Airport
Extreme base station as well. You will also need the Airport ID for the Airport Express
device as well and it can be found in the summary for that item as well or physically on the
unit.

Select Base Station Tab:
Enter a name for the Base Station or leave default name.
Enter a Base Station Password.
Select Remember this password in my keychain.
Left all other options as default.

Select Wireless Tab:
Initially used
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
Network Name: Leave same or enter your own network name
Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Channel: Automatic
Wireless Security: None
Wireless Password: blank
Verify Password: blank

Select Access Control Tab.
I did NOT change any settings.

At this point I made sure that the main base station Airport Extreme still worked with my
other computers.

STEP 2:
Plug the Airport Express into a nearby wall socket.
Do NOT attach to the Mark IV Disklavier.
Run the Airport Utility program.
Select the icon that represents the Airport Express device.
Select Manual Setup button.

Review the Summary Tab and note the Airport ID for the Airport Express device as this will
be needed when modifying the settings for the Apple Extreme in Step 3.

Select Base Station Tab:
Enter a Base Station name or leave default if you wish.
Leave password "public" that is assigned to this Express device or enter a new one if you
like.

Select Wireless Tab:
Change the Wireless Mode to "Participate in WDS network".
You should notice that a new tab labeled WDS then appears above in the row of tabs.
Wireless Security should be NONE.
Do NOT enter passwords.
Channel should be automatic

Select WDS Tab:
WDS Mode: Select WDS remote.
Enter the Airport ID for the Main Airport Extreme.

Then select "Update" button.
Your icon should have green indicator as well as the light on the actual physical base
station should be green as well.

STEP 3: Now modify the setup of the Airport Extreme in the following manner to set the
Airport Extreme up as a WDS Main by following the steps below.

Select "Manual Setup" button.

Review the info in Summary Tab.

Select Wireless Tab:
Change the Wireless Mode to "Participate in WDS network".
You should notice that a new tab labeled WDS then appears along the row of tabs.

Select WDS Tab:
Make sure the WDS main is selected in the WDS Mode.
Allow wireless clients should be checked.
Select the + button to add the Airport ID for the Airport Express device that you
obtained in Step 2. Enter the Airport ID and a description name.
Then select update.
If all goes well, you will get a message that this change has been successful.
Your icon should have green indicator as well as on the light on the actual physical base
station should be green as well.

STEP 4:
Shutdown your disklavier.
Unplug the Express device and move it near your Mark IV disklavier plugging it in a wall
socket (the light should turn green).
Connect the ethernet cable from Mark IV Disklavier to the Airport Express.
Now reboot or turn on your Mark Disklavier.
Try connecting to the Disklavier Radio.

Hope this is not too confusing. I would normally put the screens in my documentation to
make it a little easier to understand. This may be a little wordy and I apologize for that
in advance, but wanted to try to be as helpful as possible.

If you have any questions, let me know. I may eventually try this setup with some sort of
password in the future. But felt that this was the best method to use presently to get it all
to work.

Problems/Things I encountered and Suggestions that might be of help:

(1) Old Airport Base Station did not work ... I originally had an old Airport Main Base
Station and found that it did not work with the Mark IV Disklavier and Airport Express
device. So I purchased the new 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet) Airport Extreme base station.
I also purchased an Airport Express device (usually used to share (USB) printers or to hook
up external speakers or stereo to a computer via "Airtunes" an option in "iTunes".

(2) Thought the Airport Express device was faulty. So I verified that it was fine by first
attaching printer and also using it to play itunes to stereo. The Airport Express worked
fine in both these modes.

(3) Tried the hardwire connection of ethernet cable to a Portable Macintosh. Had to set
that Mac to share internet via "ethernet" option in Systems Preference. Then I subscribed
to Disklavier Radio and verified that the Disklavier's ethernet hard wired solution worked
and it did.

(4) Note: Suggest selecting NONE when entering a Wireless Security Password.
REASON: I first set this Airport Extreme up to work with my computers and initially set it
up with recommended WPA password. But one of my older Mac's could not access the
internet or email using the WPA password security, because it was running an older
system software. So I then changed to WEP password and all the other computers on my
network in house worked fine, but my main Mac did NOT work correctly with this WEP
password, nor did the Express hooked to Disklavier Mark IV. This is key and when I got up
this morning I decided to remove the password and changed that option to "NONE".
There are two passwords that are actually entered when setting up these devices one is
password for network and the other is password to change the actual settings. I still have
a password setup for the change of settings options for the Base Station. In other words,
it is OK to put in a password for the BASE STATION tab options, but use NONE for the
WIRELESS tab Security password.

PS. Thanks to Matthew for his encouragement that this would work and to others who
like myself thought that it should be a doable solution using a Macintosh and existing WIFI
network. I couldn't have done this without everyone's inputs on this forum. I hope we
all continue to offer suggestions on problems and such that we might have.

Thanks to all,

Joan

Re:Successful Airport Express with Mark IV Disklavier

Congratulations!

Does your success with Airport Express and Mark IV mean that I could also
use Airport Express with a Mark III? I know I can't use Disklavier Radio
with Mark III, but could I transmit midi files from my Mac to my disklavier
by connecting control box-to UX16 USB cable-to Airport Express? I can't
physically move my computer to be next to the piano.

Thanks for the help...
Joel

Re:Successful Airport Express with Mark IV Disklavier

2007-08-27 by jheitzeb1

I am not familiar with the Mark III or the control box or UX16 USB cable.

Have you successfully hooked this via hardwire directly yet to verify that it works without
WIFI?

I would think it would be feasible, but you would need software that would talk to the
airport express. The Airport Express works with iTunes via Airtunes mode to transfer
audio thru Airport Express to speakers connected via audio cable. The Airport Express
works with Print Utility software to print via USB cable. I think in both these cases there
is software driving the Express base station to transfer thru the various cables.

It might be worth a try if you already have these cables and control box and Airport
Express.

I felt the Airport Express would work with Mark IV as I could put the Express as a WDS
remote to just act as a transfer of internet to Mark IV via ethernet cable and it did.

Hope you get a more definitive answer. Since Yamaha sells the UX16 USB to midi cable I
wonder if they might have some knowledge of how to do what you are trying to do. Surely
there are musicians out there that have tried this.

One of the Apple support persons I talked to about connecting the Mark IV and Apple
Express told me that it would DEFINITELY NOT work, but it did.

Good Luck,
Joan

PS If i come up with any answer, I will let you know.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
