Where can I buy 720kb diskette?

Where can I buy 720kb diskette?

2007-08-25 by rondisklavier

Hi All,

I have just bought a used MX100 II and, of course, I have to join this
wonderful group so that I will be more educated on how to utilize my
disklavier.

Could you please advise me where I can still buy a double density
720kb diskette?

On Friday,I provided some of my very old 720kb diskette to the
salesman, and he was very generous by copying some performance disks
that I like. But, unfortunately, he did not know that my MX100 II
cannot play the new format.

You should also be able to format them in the PC if you cover the 2nd
hole (not the write protect hole) with a sticky label.

Even doing that, I have had terrible luck getting a disk formatted DD
in an HD drive to work reliable (especially if it was ever formatted HD
which most are). Doing it in the piano's drive works for me pretty
reliably.

On the 720K diskette issue:

I still have lots of them from a bulk purchase I made
years ago. If you need some just drop me an email.
Price is $5/10 disks. Shipping is whatever the Media
Mail price ends up to be for the quantity ordered. No
adder for packing.

Thanks!

Dear pl88ks,

Out of curiosity I looked here: <<you can purchase them at
yamahamusicsoft.you>>

and did not see them. I don't need any, but since others do, do you know
where to look? I did a search with no results.

And as another way to get discs, when I got my disklavier I asked family and
friends, and got several misc. disks plus a 50 pack, and I asked on
freecycle and got 2 full 50 packs and some misc. ones. People were thrilled to give
them to me and reclaim space! Now I probably have a lifetime supply.

However my unit uses the HD ones, so there are more available I am sure. And
somewhere I know I have a stash as my old Emax sampler used them and I used
to order them by the five hundreds.....and I am sure other Emax and other
sample owners out there probably still need them.......

ok, NOW THAT MY CURIOSITY IS PIQUED......

this includes info on drilling the holes to change format (used to work like
a charm and I bought the puncher and did many hundreds that way
successfully) , taping the holes to downsize to 720k, and all you ever could want to know
and then some.

Brings back memories, huh? my first computer had two 5-1/4 floppy drives, a
low and a high density one and a whopping few hundred kilobytes of RAM.

When 3.5 disks were first available they were like gold - a box of 10 set my
back maybe 55 or 60 bucks. And of course lyou needed 50 or more to do a
complete backup of your computer........and it took hours changing those discs
one by one.

Well I think you might want to start with getting the HD ones and covering a
hole to see if it works before stressing out to find the DD ones. But even if
you do need them there must be a stash somewhere that you can get for free
or close to free.

And here is one of the combinationis I searched on which seemed to bring up
better matches:
3.5 floppy disk dd

And here seems to be a few sources:

As an added thought.... If you want to use the HD disks, the best thing to do is use a bulk eraser (like used for reel to reel tapes, cassett tapes or video tapes) and erase the disk. Then format it in the disklavier. If it has been "used" also read "formatted" as a HDD you can/may have problems in a 720kb drive.

Hi,

You can find them at:

http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/index.php?
action=ProductCatalog&category_id=159

Alternatively:

1. Go to yamahamusicsoft.com
2. Click on 'Disklavier' on top left of page
3. Scroll down and click on 'Accessories for Computers'

Sells for US$5.95 / 5pc-pack.

Hi, Alfred,

<<You can find them at:

_http://www.yamahamuhttp://www.yhttp://www_
(http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/index.php?)
action=ProductCatalac&category_catego

Alternatively:

1. Go to yamahamusicsoft.1.
2. Click on 'Disklavier' on top left of page
3. Scroll down and click on 'Accessories for Computers'

I am sure that this will help those looking, as I searched on several terms
such as floppy, diskette, and 3.5. diskette brought up no matches. Diskette
did bring up over 800 matches, but a refined search on "diskette and floppy"
brought up nothing. and I was not going to scroll through over 800 hits in the
hope it might be buried there!.

So for those needing these, they pretty much need a specific way to find
them, as Yamaha does not make them very findable by a search.

It is also interesting how they have now become once again more pricey. I
remember buying maybe 500 for somewhere around $100 back in the day. I guess
supply and demand!

Blessings,
Wanda

Hi Wanda,

I guess its demand/supply, as well as bulk purchase discount in your
case :)

Let me refine that a bit:

A. You can go straight to:

http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/index.php?
action=ProductCatalog&category_id=159

(somehow the above address gets truncated in this post as 2 lines,
but you should copy the full address & paste it to go straight to
the relevant page).

B. Alternatively:

1. Go to: http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com
2. Scroll halfway down the page and click on "Products for
Disklaviers" on the left
3. Scroll down the page and click on "Accessories for Computers"

I recently bought 50 DS/DD (720kbyte) disks, their part 3DDDOS, from
WorldWise Computer Supplies in Columbus OH (800-994-7344). This came
to $25 plus $6 shipping, service was excellent. This source came from
Carol Beigel's page http://www.carolrpt.com/disks.htm

Thanks! But can my old MX100II play a HD disk that was formatted to
a 720kb disk? And how to format HD to DD? Please advise.

You can find everything you need to know about using floppies and formatting
them at the following web site.

There is a wealth of other information about using your Disklavier at this
site.

As I stated before. Take the disk and use the disklavier to format it.
Then you can write it in the PC.

Frankly with the exception of the firmware upgrades I don't bother
with the diskettes at all. Most everything I do I run direct from
the MIDI interface.

In cleaning up my shop I just found a new (old stock) box (of 10) maxell 2DD 720kb disks.
Free (you pay $2.00 shipping) to the first responder. (selected by time of email). In the unlikely case of a tie... I'll let someone else decide :-)
If no takers they go to the trash bin.

How do I pay you the 2 bucks?
