hi everyone,

Q:  my piano has a smartkey feature. i need to know if i can used 
this feature on midi files i downloaded from the internet? if so, 
please "show" me how. thanks.

Yes, the SmartKey feature can be used with any MIDI file. However, if the 
file was not created with SmartKey in mind, it may or may not be a convenient 
feature to use. This feature is discussed extensively on pages 52-58 of the 
Disklavier Mark III Series Basic Operation manual.

Basically, you need to turn on the Guide feature for the L and/or R part. 
Then, you can optionally turn on the Key Prompt feature and the Prompt Repeat 
feature.

I think that you can set these features to come on automatically in a SMF if 
you have embedded the proper system exclusive MIDI codes in the file. I don't 
know which messages they are and don't have a SmartKey-enabled Disklavier at 
my command to test. However, you could open up a published, SmartKey MIDI 
file in a sequencer and delete the SysEx messages one at a time until you 
discover which ones which set up these features.
