Yes, the SmartKey feature can be used with any MIDI file. However, if the
file was not created with SmartKey in mind, it may or may not be a convenient
feature to use. This feature is discussed extensively on pages 52-58 of the
Disklavier Mark III Series Basic Operation manual.
Basically, you need to turn on the Guide feature for the L and/or R part.
Then, you can optionally turn on the Key Prompt feature and the Prompt Repeat
feature.
I think that you can set these features to come on automatically in a SMF if
you have embedded the proper system exclusive MIDI codes in the file. I don't
know which messages they are and don't have a SmartKey-enabled Disklavier at
my command to test. However, you could open up a published, SmartKey MIDI
file in a sequencer and delete the SysEx messages one at a time until you
discover which ones which set up these features.
