Remote control of DK

Remote control of DK

2001-01-22 by James Hyder

Dear folks,

Here's a question that might be a little more challenging than the usual
"How do you format a floppy disk?"

I have my Disklavier (DC3A, Mark III) connected via a Midiman USB/MIDI box
to a notebook computer that is in turn connected to my home network. I'd
like to be able to control the piano from my office computer, which is at
the other end of the house from the piano.

I know that I can remotely control the piano's computer using PCanywhere or
another remote control program (actually there's one that looks pretty good
called Remote-Anything: http://www.twd-industries.com/) but it seems to me
there ought to be a simpler way.

If I could make the Midiman box a network resource, then I could run my MIDI
player software on the office computer with the output set to the midiman.
Does anyone know if this is possible under Win98 SE? (No, I haven't gotten
around to asking anyone at Micro$oft, yet.) The notebook does not have a
serial or parallel port: only the USB and a PC card slot.

I suppose it's pretty silly to be unwilling to spend $70 - $130 on a remote
control program after dropping $30K on the piano, but I just don't feel like
spending that much money for this one rather frivolous function if I don't
have to. Also, the way I've suggested just seems more elegant and
operationally simpler--if it's possible.

I'm also open to any other suggestions short of remotely controlling the
notebook. Thanks.

There's a reasonable FREE alternative to PCanywhere et'al called VNC. Check
it out at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/. It works on practically any
type of OS. Not quote as fast as PCA, but since you're on a LAN it should be
plenty fast.

Making the Midiman visible from across the LAN like you would a printer is
going to be pretty difficult with just Windows, but if VNC doesn't work for
you, it would be pretty easy to create a simple server that runs on the
Midiman machine that fields requests from other machines on the LAN and does
whatever... It would definitely take writing some custom software. If you
pick something like Python or Visual Basic the task might not be too bad,
but definitely require some programming expertise. I'm not aware of any
products that already do this (especially free).

Dear Dirk,

Thanks for the tip. I'll check out VNC.

I don't have the computer expertise (or the time) to do the custom
programming you suggest. So you're pretty sure there's no easy way to share
a USB device on a Windows network?

Thanks again.
