RE: [disklavier] Locking plastic cover for floppy/CD drive unit

RE: [disklavier] Locking plastic cover for floppy/CD drive unit

I have passed by a number of DKs at hotels, etc. where there was a plastic
face plate screwed in place over the front that somehow attached to the side
mounting screws.

Any one know where these come from?

It protects the mechanism from anyone ejecting CDs or FDs.

Hi Mark,

My MkIII control box has suffered damage from my nearly 3yo toddler on a
couple of occasions. In the first instance, she decided to rip the CD tray
right out of the control box ! After I composed myself... I very gingerly
took apart the control box and managed to get the CD tray mechanism back
into place. It still plays fine now, but sometimes needs a little help
ejecting the CDs. (small amount of leverage applied to the front face
against the control box chassis with a thin, blunt implement.

The CD drive is a generic Panasonic 24X CR-ROM model # CR-176-B . You can
pickup a 2nd hand drive on ebay for ~USD$30 . Beats the USD$250 I was
originally quoted from a spare parts rip off merchant. Even though the
original drive stills works, I decided to order a replacement drive just in
case as to the best of my knowledge these CD drive units are no longer
produced.

More recently, the same toddler managed to jam the floppy drive door open.
I suspect she 'ripped' out a floppy disk at a weird angle and caught the
metal guides, bending them. I managed to bend them back with a couple of
fine screwdrivers through the drive door.

BTW, I would not recommend for anyone to take apart their control box for
repairs unless they are very comfortable in dismantling and reassembling
sensitive electronic and mechanical componentry.

Bottomline, I would be very willing to pay for such a locking device. It
took me years to save up for my disklavier.. and to come home from work at
the end of a long day to find my piano has been damaged in a few moments of
unsatisfactory levels of supervision is heartbreaking. I have seen floppy
drive locks in the past, but to my way of thinking, its the CD drive which
is the most vulnerable to toddler damage.

If anyone knows of a MKIII control box lockable cover, I'd dearly like to
buy one too !

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone's heard of or seen a locking plastic cover
for the face of the electronic pieces of the Mark III unit. I have two
toddlers who find it amusing to stick things in the disk drive.

We were at the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland, and saw that
their piano in the lobby had a locking plastic cover over the entire
face of the area where you put the CD and floppy drives. (Not the
keyboard; just the electronic parts).

Am hoping something like that is for sale, but haven't seen anything on
the Yamaha site or online.

Any thoughts? Has anyone had this custom made, or is home piano
security not a big issue? :)

This is not something Yamaha ever produced (at least not for Europe). I've never seen anything like this on any of the hotel/bar/restaurant pianos I've serviced so I guess it must be a custom installation.

Greetings Mark,

from reading other postings, it looks like there may be no stock plastic cover for the control box. however, there are plastic fabricators all over the place. TAP plastics (not by any means the best but they have chain retail outlets all over the place) does simple fabrication jobs. unless you can come up with an elegant design and specify it with materials that they have on hand (acrylic and polycarbonate clear plastic and ready made hinges and possibly a lock hasp but you could install one afterwards) they are not likely to be able to design it unless there is a particularly motivated employee at a particular branch. if they can't do any more, they should be able to cut and fold a simple cover. they even have laser cutting machines at most branches so they can make complicated cuts to a sheet and fold it into a box. the plastics can also be cut into simple rectangles and solvent glued together.

Christmas Carillon Program for the piano

2007-12-03 by Spencer_Lists

pre-Christmas Greetings,

I have just uploaded a free file to my website. It is a "Christmas Carillon" player for your MIDI file player. I have tested it on my computer and pianos and have had a few friends test it but it would be good to hear if it works from others.

The program implements a "Virtual Carillon" which plays selected MIDI (or other media files such as mp3) files on a scheduled basis. At any specified time, file playing automatically begins.

As configured, "carillon.exe" will play "Westminster" chimes on the hour and then play a Christmas Carol. Default playing is with the "Windows Media Player" using the default MIDI device. Following the simple installation instructions will create this default configuration. Just unzip the downloaded file and read the simple instructions in the "readme_first.txt" file. This will play the music on you computer sound card unless your computer configuration is highly unusual.

If you have the ability to connect your computer to your Disklavier or PianoDisc piano you can configure "carillon.exe" to play your piano instead. You will need to read the "use of carillon.doc" or "use of carillon.pdf" file for advanced instructions. Don't be intimidated. You can set up this program to do all sorts of fun things so the manual is several pages long. To have the program play your piano, you just need to change the MIDI device that "Windows Media Player" uses. Look for instructions in the "use of" file.

If you download the program, please let me know if it works or if you have any problems. I will never know if I don't hear from people who try it. If you find the manual confusing, please let me know.

I believe I have the MIDI files set up to play the piano and chime parts correctly. If you play on your Disklavier or PianoDisc (with built in accompaniment synthesizer) and both a chime and piano part do (or do not) please let me know.

The Christmas Carols are from Reproducing Piano Rolls from Ampico and Duo-Art but you can substitute any files that you prefer.

Re: Locking plastic cover for floppy/CD drive unit

I am an owner of a Mark III. My todler broke off the CD tray on my
unit as well. I went to the local Yamaha dealer and he order a
Yamaha cover that consisted of a new bracket to hold the controller
to the bottom of the piano, with a locking plastic cover. The remote
works throug the plastic.

My only criticism was that the holes in the new bracket do not
exactly fit the existing holes in the piano. I fixed this by
drilling a new hole in the bracket -- not into the piano...

Any good plastic sheet fabrication shop can make such a cover. They can
be made by heat bending and by cut and solvent weld, probably the
cheaper method.

Sounds like a great idea for protecting it from unauthorized use. You
could still use the remote and play the pieces in memory.

Willing to make Locking plastic covers for floppy/CD drive unit

2007-12-04 by Mark

If anyone needs a cover for their control unit, I would consider making
some. I could use one myself. I would have to buy some supplies since
the supplies I had when I did this kind of work making signs is too old.
Let me know if you are interested and I will try to put together a
proposal.
I have looked at my control unit and I could make a cover that fits over
and locks in place like a puzzle. An adult could easily get it off but a
toddler would have a difficulty. I could also find some thumb screws to
make them removeable without a screw driver.

RE: [disklavier] Willing to make Locking plastic covers for floppy/CD drive unit

2007-12-04 by Michael Weinstock

Hi Mark,

Even with international shipping charges, I would still be interested.
Perhaps if you can make a prototype and share some photos with us ? Also
interested in a rough idea of cost.

Taking a closer look at my control box, I notice that there are 4 rubber
feet on the bottom. Since the unit never touches the ground, I'd be willing
to remove those rubber feet to accept a cover. Rubber feet are often fitted
by hand so I'd expect there may be some small variation in placement between
like model control boxes.. Something to keep in mind when making custom
built plastic work. On the bottom I also notice 3 indentations in the
center of the metalwork from front to back, possibly for ventilation ?
Those indentations I suspect would easily accept a pressure style 'clip
in'... Easy for an adult to remove.. Not so easy for little fingers ;-)

Regards,

Michael in Melbourne

I have looked at my control unit and I could make a cover that fits over
and locks in place like a puzzle. An adult could easily get it off but a
toddler would have a difficulty. I could also find some thumb screws to
make them removeable without a screw driver.
