MX100B calibration

Hi All
I recently obtained an MX100B that, although probably grey, appears
virtually new. Everything works, but there seems to be no way you can
adjust the individual playing level of each key. This is possible in my
Mk11XG, and also in the MX80, but there is no Maintenance Mode for the MX100B.

The volume at low MIDI levels is too loud and is inconsistent over the
keyboard, being slightly louder in the middle. Is there a way I can adjust
this, apart from the trimmer adjustment in the side of the control box
(which has little effect anyway)?

Another unusual aspect of the MX100B is that it does not respond to
changing the volume in the vanBasco MIDI player. I'd love to know why this
is the case.

I believe that everything that Disklavier can do is programmed into a ROM 
chip.  The MarkIIXG has flash memory and you can mess with it.  Probably the 
default "volume" is set to a value of 100.  The other thing that may not be 
working is the "soft" pedal - the one on the left.  On an upright piano, 
this pedal moves the hammer rail half way the distance to the strings, 
thereby wasting much of the energy gains before hitting the strings.  On my 
Disklavier, this pedal activates at a volume lever of -4.  You can hear the 
little motor that moves the rail, and feel that there is a lot of lost 
motion in the keyboard if you use your fingers to play the keys.

Perhaps the volume is louder in the middle of the keyboard because those are 
the ,keys that get played the most and they may need voicing.

You can always stuff egg crate type foam against the soundboard, or use the 
utilities to adjust the volume on the data files (songs on the floppy disks) 
to about 64 or lower.

I assume that you know that you can update the System Software for the MarkIIXG by going to

I believe it is the dkutil (or the dkvutil) programs that allow you to 
convert a Yamaha disk into a .fil file that your computer can read.  They 
are programs designed (using DOS) to convert a proprietary Yamaha file to 
something you can mess with - a MIDI file.  The older model of Disklavier 
you buy, the more knowlege you will need and the more hoops you will jump 
through to do what you want to do.

The first disklaviers didn't have a self calibrating function. The hammer and key sensor rails have to be adjusted with the help screws located in 4 positions under the keys and on the action.

The MX100B will transmit MIDI volume but does not receive it.

Good morning, everyone.

Either the Mark II or the Mark IIXG was the first Disklavier to  
respond to MIDI Control 7 (volume) messages as far as the piano part  
is concerned.

The Disklavier's native Controller 7 setting is 100. In most cases, it  
is best to make sure that the piano tracks in your MIDI files have  
this setting. Unfortunately, many MIDI file authors boost the  
Controller 7 setting to a number above 100 (127 is the highest) in  
order to compensate for tone generators that have weak piano sounds or  
which are connected to weak speakers.
