I don't know anything specific about this system but my experience with electronics is that it is connections about 95% of the time.
Can you use the audio input from another CD player? If so, the system board is probably OK and it may just be the CD drive or the connection between it and the rest of the system.
If it is a rather generic CD drive it probably has an audio cable connecting it to the system. Try checking for a good connection and use a good grade of contact cleaner / lube on it. If it is OEM for Yamaha it might have a ribbon cable or other connector.
If you find that drive is bad and is expensive to replace you might want to use an external drive. A Sony DVD/CD player that will play MP3 jukebox DVDs costs $50. You can fit 70 hours of music on a DVD.
