Yes, it's by MAC address...but I don't have to type it in, it's available via a dropdown since the router already knows all of the MACs that are attached to it...
Here's something close to what my setup screen looks like: (just googled for dlink dhcp reservation)
http://support.dlink.com/emulators/WBR2310/lan.htm
which linksys do you have?
I agree that the virtual prc is much nicer with a fixed IP address...

With my router (Linksys), I can turn on DHCP and give a starting
address. I don't see a feature named similar to what you suggest.
I had been in the practice of having DHCP start at X.Y.Z.129 and
assigning static IP addresses for those devices where I have been
able to do so beginning at X.Y.Z.1. (Note X, Y, and Z are all fixed
numbers less than 255 representative of my private network.)
On what basis does your router assign the same IP address to a
device? Does it use the MAC? Do you provide the MAC to your router?
Otherwise what else about the device can the router detect before it
assigns an IP address?
On nearly all devices that are permanent on my home network I've been
able to assign a static IP address. I can't imagine the piano going
anywhere.... And I get tired of the URL to the Virtual PRC changing.
